Dominique Millette's disturbing blog about women being expected to be sexually available at co-ed busines functions does indeed provide another reason why women may be reluctant to network in those settings--self-preservation.

Sarah, you've shamed me. I've been fiddling about with an idea for a Salon and haven't done anything about it. Your post really hit the button. I've been a member of RSL of years and every time I go to a function I get little tickles on my flesh that make me want to break out into an outrageous Bette Midler routine and go splat on their cliquey moue-ness. If I can't join your Salon I think I may well weep!
All power to you, Sarah.

"Beautiful essay, Sarah!  My own contact with some of the best books ever written took place mostly before I was 24 years old.  Maybe I'll give some of those classics another try."
