Hi, Stephanie. I do the same thing - sometimes in my research files, or even on my desktop background. I also find it helpful to listen to music from the period, if such a thing's available. I just sit and listen, closing my eyes, and it's…

VERY useful thing for my HF: dropping pictures in electronic file

I don't know if anyone else does this, but it focuses me right away. I drop in pictures of my characters or where they live and it helps me get in there right away. I'm writing about a 19th century woman and I drop in a contemporary painting of such a woman before a mirror... I find this to be a big help!MARRYING MOZART (Viking Penguin)CLAUDE & CAMILLE: a novel of Monet (Crown, April 2010)www.StephanieCowell.comSee More

Félicitations Stephanie and nice of you to connect.  Very much like the passage:

I never would have had it turn out as it did. You were with all of us when we began, you gave us courage.

My friend, actress and writer, Joanna Rush, has moved to New England from NYC and is going there to visit friends this weekend.  I will be promoting my books in this city, the setting of my two novels. Best to you...I hope to glean a little writing wisdom from you.

How exciting, Stephanie, to meet another Paris lover-author! Thank you for your compliment. I am curious about how you are using Paris in your novel and what is happening there.... I set "Sex and Other Sacred Games"(co-authored with Kim Chernin) in my favorite Paris café. Now I am working on an erotic novel altogether set in Paris, and of course, the café plays a role again. Many great cafés play a role... :)
