Profile Information

Who I am:
A writer of 18th century historical fiction, contemparary flash fiction, poetry, and freelance non-fiction.

Also, I study and teach Kum Nye-Tibetan Yoga, Certified by the Nyingma Institute of Brazil. Nyingma is the “Old School” of Tibet Buddhism. Kum Nye yoga originates from the ancient Buddhist Vinaya and Tibetan medical texts . The word Kum means to expand, Nye means to stimulate the flux of energy in the body, to bring the body and mind into equilibrium. Tibetan born, Tarthang Tulku Rinpoche, brought the Kum Nye Relaxation method to the West after Chinese occupation in Tibet. Kum Nye is an ancient structured yoga practice based on personal experience, developed and rooted in Buddhism, combining postures with meditation and self-massage.

I received my Bachelors of Arts, in Studio Art, from Whitman College, Walla Walla, Washington, USA, in 1994. And I have been a business writer and visual artist since. All my life I have written poetry, but my main passion is historical fiction. Blessed.

My current work-in-progress is The Tile Maker a historical adventure story told from the point of view of a famous Portuguese tile maker at the pivotal colonial event: The Great Lisbon Earthquake of November 1, 1755, All Saints Day.

Piloto Mendes Pires shop harbors a secret tile innovator that has put their works into demand by Lisbon’s elite and at odds with a Jesuit priest. Busy on local orders, the shop recieves a commission from a curious place in the Amazon from a wealthy wood exporter. The shop sets to the order. Mid-fabrication, one of the African workers see’s a forwarning omen and notifies Piloto. But Piloto see’s things differently, until, sequential- all life threatening- disasters strike, and the tile maker, the shop, Portugal and priests, and the colony of Brazil are called upon in unfathomable ways.

A tale of art, defying gender and class, resilience, and the power of nature and love to heal.

Where I live? The Mata Atlantica

Along the southern coast of Brazil are patches of the once extensive Brazilian Atlantic rain forest, a rain forest that used to run the length of Brazil's coast.  Now, just 5-7% of that great forest, older than the Amazon, is intact in 2012.   Despite its reduced size, and it’s listing as the second most endangered rain forest in the world after Madagascar’s, the Brazilian Atlantic rain forest, can boast more indigenous tree species per hectare than any other forest in the world.

I originally came here to paint endangered plants, but now it's my home and where I write from and paint.

11 Indespensible Writing Books for Fiction

With a plethora of writing books I sat on the floor, for hours, in the writing section of Powell’s Bookstore in Portland, Oregon, investigating ALL the writing books they had on their shelves. Happily I hunted.  At that time I left with two key books (*listed below).   In other cases, a writing friend has suggested a “must have” book, or even gifted me a pertinent writing book.  In the books that follow I found the answers to writing questions or problems I was encountering in writing my first…See More

Up Productivity: Writing and Editing

Mid-way through my current novel’s rewrite I came across an article in the November/December 2011 issue of Poets and Writers “A Writer’s Daily Habit” by Ellen Sussman, the excellent advice I gleaned: break writing down into 45 minute blocks with 15 minute breaks in between.  She calls this the “Unit System.” I tried it.  It worked.  It revolutionized my writing process.  What I found was that I could rewrite ten pages in a day, whereas before I would get through, on average, four. Why is this…See More

Stephanie, Welcome to the novelist group! You might introduce yourself by telling us what you’re working on in the “Show Me Your Novel and I’ll Show You Mine” discussion if you're not too uncomfortable talking about what you're working on. And we do a live chat every Wednesday; hope you can join us for that!

Thank you, Stephanie!  I love the 18th century. It's far enough back that it really seems 'historical',  yet at the same time it's not so far back that primary sources are difficult for the average person (i.e. me)  to access.

Saraswati: Invoking assistance to Write

Posted on May 9, 2012 at 7:00am 0 Comments

As writers a moment arrives when we need to call upon something larger than ourselves, to intervene, to assist in our creative endeavor.  Maybe the novel idea, characters, scenes have been visiting you for years but you just can’t seem to start writing, or you sit in front of your blank screen waiting for the words to burst forth, but nothing.  Or, life required you to take leave of your half- written manuscript, and now, months or years have passed but the work still begs to be completed,…
