I first met Barb Johnson in 2009, in Albuquerque. The newly-minted AROHO Gift of Freedom award winner was visiting the state to meet with the Board of the Foundation, and they’d asked me, as the outgoing recipient, to come down and check her out.
Even I—skeptic though I am—couldn’t resist the charm of this smart…

I promised in my last post to follow with tips to writing a successful grant application. Tomorrow I'll lay out some of the nitty-gritty steps, but today I'm going for broke. This is the big picture, the "why" of it all. You have a dream, you have an ambition, you want to see it happen--but before you go answering questions on any application, take a crack at these.
The time you spend clarifying what you love, what you want to do, and why you are the person to do it, is time well…

About five years ago I was visiting Portland, Oregon, when my cell phone rang. I was getting ready to attend my son’s college graduation, and almost didn’t answer. I’m glad I did.
On the other end of the line was Mary Johnson, calling to tell me I’d been selected to receive the 4th Gift of Freedom, a $50,000 award from A Room of Her Own Foundation.
Imagine my surprise! I’d spent a lot of care and effort on the application, but I knew the odds of my winning the prize…

Congratulations on the award for Wrecker (Raising Wrecker)...deserves all the attention and praise it is getting. Hope all the hoopla still gives you time for raw writing. Hope to see you at AROHO's next.
Hi Summer,
I'm swearing off the internet--I just can't--can't monkey around so much with it when I have a book I'm trying to write, you know? But I just wanted to go on here one last time before buckling down. Wanted to tell you I was in the library the other day and your book, Wrecker, jumped right off the new fiction shelf and into my hand--I was so happy. I like it a lot so far! No need to comment back b/c I won't see it for a long, long time probably.
Yes, its the critical acclaim aspect that always gets me. If I'm honest with myself, that has been my goal far more than sales. However, like you, I write what I want to write. I shall see shortly, as my novel is nearly the end of agent edits - on to the publishers...
BTW, I've purchased Wrecker and am very much looking forward to reading it. I absolutely love forrests - I find them mystical and full of quiet power. I can't wait to immerse myself in that world.

Lori Duffy Foster said… Hi Summer! As it turns out, there are a couple more available. Another taker saw your post and said she would take just two so you could have some. So if you email your address, I'll send them along. Don't worry about postage. I can send them media mail and that's pretty cheap.
