I received an interesting email the other day from one of the authors in the publishing house I work for. Sales for this author's book were down and the publisher asked me to go over the author's marketing plan submitted prior to publication. I went down the list and asked the author if any of these promotions had been done.
His reply stunned me. “I'm not going to do anymore marketing until I see some sales.”
Maybe it's me, but the logic of his answer escapes…

What happens when something you love becomes WORK?
Yes, that's my current dilemma. I love to read (who doesn't?) and mystery has been my favorite genre until I became acquisitions editor for Oak Tree Press. The manuscripts came fast and furious, box loads via snail mail, cyber submissions filled my e-mail. All of a sudden I was forced to speed read the first 30 pages, make decisions like a Roman…

You've worked hard on your query. You followed all the “rules” you read in writing magazines. You've sweated blood to create a great opening, to get the synopsis down to a page. I'm the acquisitions editor who received this carefully constructed letter.
To be honest, before I read your synopsis, I googled your…

Sigh, still wearing my hiking boots...
Sunny, thank you for accepting my apology and I'm thrilled to be your SheWrites friend! I get the part about not biting the hand that feeds you but I do hope I have! Would love to stop humming "If I Only had a Brain" and start singing "Sunny, thank you for the sun..." I've written a memoir and would be happy to send a query to Oak Tree Press. SO SAD that I missed the memoir contest. Rats.

Perhaps your feline friend would appreciate (and I use that term loosely) a product my cat will be receiving for Christmas...an inflatable unicorn horn with elastic ear straps.
Instant Cat-icorn!
