Susan Barrett Price

"Tribe of the Breakaway Beads" (2011) is an illustrated novella, developed from journals and family history. It's about women with moxie, who know how to turn discontent into action. It's about grand exits and fresh starts.

"Passion and Peril on the Silk Road" (2008) was my first published novel. It's about intrigue in the international antiquities trade, murder, betrayal, and revenge. Main characters Jackson and Nellie were once husband and wife. Now they clash over the best road back from heartbreak and injustice. That road takes them from Manhattan to the far reaches of western China and tribal Pakistan. The writing is based on my being a close observer of the art and antiquities world, as well as travels through this part of Central Asia. I was also thinking a lot about vengeance, honor killings, rage and forgiveness.

I have been blogging, memoir-writing, traveloguing, etc. at Mad In Pursuit for 10 years now. You can also find me at Twitter and Google+.

I'm an advocate of Creative Commons licensing and for the emergence of new paradigms in publishing, both for career writers and for those who write for purposes other than making a living.

My two cents: You do have to work Twitter as you would a party, but after a couple years and 300-400 Following/Followers, I haven't found it very helpful in making meaningful connections. I'm beginning to find that Google+ is more useful…

Thanks so much, Renate, for ordering my book. I do hope you'll find it an engaging excursion. By the way, I've been inspired to do some city-to-city train travel in Europe in Jan-Feb (a month) with my mate. I'm kind of organizing it…

@Robert Edward, memoirs definitely hunger for a theme (who would be interested simply in the tick-tock of your days?). Interesting to see that you are spinning them into a novel. Interesting inspiration. Keep at it!

I'm surprised I didn't already know about that platform, looks like I have at least 6 contacts without having to look for them (thanks to FaceBook).
Great idea to look over old journals and distill the materials that make up our own adventure kits, then share them. Of late I've been thinking about all the stuff I've been sending into cyberspace and before that on different forums and how to bundle such materials. You've made a great example how to go about that.
Kudos to you!

Hi Susan, I congratulate you for the fine work of "Passion & Peril on the Silk Road"! What a page turner. The lovely cover keeps its promise of sexy suspense, and I liked the characters of the intrigue: they all seem satisfyingly troubled and troublesome in their temptation to slide from antiquities dealing to antiquities stealing... and other illegal temptations. Where do you get those exotic places and ideas from? Have you been on the Silk Road yourself? Or was that a former life, re-channeled? Brava! It's truly amazing to go traveling with Taylor, Nellie, Anne, Catherine etc.......

Susan, I am more than sympathetic to your rather yucky experience with book exchanges on She Writes -- I can say much the same. Tried it with one novelist and one memoirist, and my enthusiasm, the idea of mutual acknowledgment and perhaps even doing a blog post together about the potential discoveries in this process, went south into a one-way street of astonishing narcissism and lack of mindfulness. Oy vej! Still, as you can tell, I have not given up hope, entirely. :)

What The Hell: Creating Random Poetry

Posted on July 30, 2010 at 12:24pm 0 Comments

My current book project consists of very short essays that add up to a novel. Between the essays, I’m thinking about inserting supplementary “ingenuities” — doodles, mindmaps, maybe a limerick or two. Anything goes.

I woke up this morning thinking I’d take a page from the avant-garde and put together a “poem” through the random selection of lines written by famous women poets -- kind of a writerly I Ching. I got out my Norton Anthology of Modern Poetry and my… Continue

Publishers Weekly Best of 2009 Minus Women

Posted on November 11, 2009 at 9:12am 0 Comments

Publishers Weekly goofed when it published its Top Ten Books of 2009 and failed to include any books by women. "We ignored gender and genre and who had the buzz" wrote Louisa Ermelino. "We gave fair chance to the 'big' books of the year, but made them stand on their own two feet. It disturbed us when we were done that our list was all male."

I was tempted to launch into a diatribe about how men… Continue

On-Demand Memoir: Publishing Online for 3 AM Googlers

Posted on August 3, 2009 at 7:36am 4 Comments

Memoirs are popular. Everyone's got a story to tell. I stumbled onto the form soon after I started my web diary in 1999, when I was bored with rants about work and someone invited me to join her Memoir ring. I was hooked. A crazy quilt of childhood and coming-of-age stories began to fill my online pages.

I wrote for myself. I disguised names and places. I figured that my storytelling should be fascinating enough without anyone taking issue with my "facts." No one paid attention.… Continue
