Thanks for your kinds words everyone. Must get this story written fully before the memoir trend has completely died.

How wonderful that the support group gave you those journals. The healing power of just getting it out of your head should never be underestimated. Love this entry. And love that they're making stories of their own. Great job, on both accounts.

Wow, that's quite an essay. I had to read it twice to get all of the intensity you put into words so eloquently. I guess your kids are a force that was meant to be. They've overcome an incredible hurdle to get where they are and I suspect they inher…

Lanita — Thanks for your kind words. I think the emotions surrounding having a very premature child continue to swing back and forth. Now that they have graduated from high school and are heading to college, I find myself right back on the NICU. The…

Wow! De ja vu. I'm a mother of a preemie as well (11 or 12 weeks early, they were never quite sure of the due date/ 2pounds 6 ounces). Your essay takes me back to a rough time. I remember journaling as well. When I really started to feel like writin…

Susan, I am so surprised to hear about the SV/Chicago Mom's blog. I am a new blogger, joined the group in Feb. I believe, and heard nothing about this, until I read your post. I just double checked my email, to make sure I didn't miss something. What happened? Thanks so much, Ally

Oh, and you're in Evanston! I went to high school in Northbrook, and used to go into Evanston for dates. My son is at U of Chicago now.

>walking three days a week with three different walking partners — all writers!

Saw this on the mother-writer thread and thought: how lucky! I also have a few writers I hike with, but in a less organized way.

I voted! Your daughter sounds so so amazing! I hope she wins. When I voted she had 69 votes, more than most I think :) Good luck!

That's a great idea, to write a blog post on here instead of starting multiple discussions. You might also want to put a blurb on the group's main thread to draw attention to it since it's really easy to overlook blog posts--there are so many.

I am guilty of only blogging here if I'm asked. It's not because I don't want to, only that there are so many things I want to write and have a hard enough time getting my own blogs written. I think it's a good thing to do, though. Maybe I'm really just intimidated. :) I'll look her up. Thanks for the recommendations!

Hi Susan,

I wonder if you can look up the podcast for that episode of This American Life. They actually did start it out with "There are two kinds of people". I know what you're saying about messages. I don't know if it helps, but in comments like this you can "View thread" so you can reference the discussion. I usually do since I have goldfish brain. I don't think direct messages work that way though, and it is indeed frustrating.

Mother Writer! Essay Contest Entry

We have been requested to post our entries to the Mother Writer! Essay Contest, that was held in in honor of SheWrites one year anniversary. Here's my entry:

-------

Mother Writer? Writer Mother? For me, it’s a chicken or the egg question. When you become a mother, you figure out pretty quickly how to write good nonfiction: medical histories; notes to counselors and teachers outlining everything they need to know about your child; letters to kids at camp; notes in lunch boxes; so many permissi… Continue

In Celebration of Women Writers

When I read about She Writes call to action in response to Publishers Weekly's omission of any women writers from their 2009 top 10 list, I was moved write about it, but chose a different forum. I felt that posting here on SheWrites.com was a little like preaching to the choir, so I chose to make my voice heard where I thought it could do the most good — on the Chicago Moms Blog, part of a la… Continue
