My Smartphone Future

Before I went to bed last night I read an article in the New York Times about a convoy of people in the States who are eschewing Smartphones. It was written by a journalist named Teddy Wayne. And yes. Instead of I-phones or Blackberries or watchamacallits, Wayne reports that many folks he’s talked to recently have bought old-fashioned cell phones that do two simple…See More

Susan Conley Reflects on The Foremost Good Fortune

The Foremost Good Fortune is a poignant and insightful memoir that delves into the trickiest questions of motherhood, mortality, and belonging. When Susan Conley and her family leave their house in Maine for a two-year stint in Beijing, they are prepared to weather the inevitable onslaught of culture shock. But the challenges of living in a foreign country become even more complicated…See More

Power of the Book

We hit a deer on a dark, empty road near Gorham a few weeks ago. All of us, including the giant stag, seemed to make it through okay, except our Prius, which has been doing a great deal of rattling ever since. Then last week the car temporarily died by the side of I-295, north of Portland. Aidan was in the back seat—never…See More

Shameless Blog Entry to Ask you to Vote for The Foremost Good Fortune

I am excited The Foremost Good Fortune, my China memoir that detours into cancer, is a finalist for Goodreads Choice Awards. Could you, would you vote for it? It's a book I believe in with a message about motherhood and adventure and life after cancer. I would be so grateful.  http://www.goodreads.com/award/choice/2011#56968-Best-Travel-&a...See More

So What is Travel Writing Anyway?

The Goodreads Choice Awards have nominated my book, The Foremost Good Fortune, for its semi-final round in the Travel Writing Section. And you could be so very kind as to vote for my book here. On Saturday I had the treat of driving two hours up the Maine coast to teach a memoir writing class at the Rockland Public Library. It is a beautiful, historic library—with high, white plaster…See More

The Foremost Good Fortune is Nominated for The Goodreads Choice Awards and I Have a Favor to Ask

This is the part of the blog that gets kind of awkward for me where I ask you to do me a favor. There is a great online rest stop for book lovers called Goodreads, and every year Goodreads nominates its favorite 15 books in a whole lot of categories, called The Goodreads Choice Awards. The Foremost Good Fortune is so happy to have been nominated in the Travel and Outdoors Section. The thing is, Goodreads asks me to ask YOU to vote for my book. You may now be running away from your computer as…See More

Writerhead

Susan Conley is interviewed on blogger Kristin Bair O'Keefe's 'Writerhead Wednesday', a weekly feature in which "a brilliant, charming, remarkable author answers three questions about her/his writerhead… a precious opportunity for looky-loos around the world to sneak into the creative noggins of talented writers and (ever so gently) muck about." 1. Describe your state of writerhead…See More

The Book Tour as Love Story

In San Francisco, I loved a tall African man named Devta who wore black Buddy Holly glasses and a tan waxed overcoat. He was the easiest to love. He came from the Congo and worked as a political science professor at Berkeley. He stood at the table where I signed books after the reading and talked to me about poetry and the music of non-fiction. In Florida, I loved a woman named Jasmine, a sixty-two year-old grandmother in a green velour sweat suit with a salt and pepper pageboy. She bought my…See More

The Beijing Train Station

When Tony and the boys and I went back to China this past June, the trip was part homecoming, part book tour and part detective work. What I wanted to uncover were the pieces of China that we’d missed the most since we moved away. Was it the food? The dumplings that were steamed or pan-fried or boiled in soups, and filled with shrimp and tofu and egg and chive? Home-made knife noodles that Mao Ayi cut with the scissors in our kitchen and served with small bowls of chili sauce? The warm baozi…See More

Thanks so much for your note! I was actually thinking about your memoir the other day because a friend's brother and sister-in-law are moving to Shanghai from the UK for a couple of years and my friend wanted the names of books they might enjoy and learn from. Yours naturally sprung to mind first! As for my memoir, I've finished a draft and am waiting for an agent to read the full ms. We'll see! I can't wait to read your memoir!

Forgive me if I've already reached out to you, but I just wanted to add my two cents in support of the amazing Jennifer Lauck's generous offer to host our first-ever Portland She Writes meetup, on Tuesday June 29th, to celebrate our one-year anniversary. While this virtual community is wonderful, I think we all feel that gathering in person is also meaningful and crucial to our well-being, and I hope this will be the first of many such gatherings going forward.

At the anniversary meetups, we are asking attendees to participate in She Writes' Book Communion: bring one book, your own or another She Writers', and leave with another one, a perfect way to get to know each other better and to support one another's work. We will also be blowing out a candle for SW's birthday along with women gathered in 16 cities around the country (and in London!), a historic (or at least pretty darn cool) occasion.

If you can attend, or even if you can't, please RSVP to Jennifer here as a way to thank her for her willingness to step up as host.
