Thanks for asking your question. The discussion has helped me understand a lot about the sales end of this business. Now I feel like I at least can ask a few intelligent questions when I talk to my editor.

I think it's always good to bear in mind that something like 90 percent of books published sell fewer than 500 copies. I might have the percentage slightly wrong, but it's shocking in any case. On the other hand, I heard at a conference…

I got an advance of $6,000, so I guess I'm a little behind the curve on sales. The contract, which is almost entirely pro forma, doesn't say how many copies they planned to print. I sort of had an agent help me with the contract, but…

Hi Suzanne, Did you sell this book with an agent's participation? If so, he/she should be able to explain all the statements to you, and can get whatever information you're not able to get from the publisher yourself. As for what…

Thanks Maria! I tried most of these tactics - they don't return my calls or emails. I'll look in the contract, though. I didn't realize that it should be in there. That would be good.

Hi Suzanne, These may be actions you've taken already, but I thought I would post them anyway: You should definitely have access to how many books the publisher printed on your sales/earnings reports. If there is no round number that would…

Understanding Sales Figures

Does anyone know what constitutes "good" sales? My first book, "Off the Beaten (Subway) Track," which is a cross between a travelogue and guide book about unusual things to see and do in NYC, came out that summer. It's a niche book for sure, and the publisher never confirmed how many copies were even printed. (Somewhere between 3,000 and 5,000.) I get semi-regular sales reports, but I have no idea how to interpret them. Any ideas? Thanks!
