The latest developments in my search for my deceased father, my memoir project, and some musings about technology, identity, and memory. What does our society lose when "the lost" does not have an online presence, or can't be easily Googled?

On Becoming a Writer (Again): A Progress Report of Habits

Posted on June 29, 2010 at 3:45pm 2 Comments

My summer project: to rethink myself back into creative "writer" identity, after a PhD program and a job away. I'm using my blog, KikuGirl, as "my own private MFA." Here's a post that kills two birds with one stone: it's a revision of an earlier self-assignment (tell a story by using lists) and it's a progress report on how I'm thinking myself back into the writing life.

Tamiko, Been enjoying your blog posts. We are on somewhat parallel tracks, I as well writing discovery memoir about my father, both of us having lost our dads at early age. Much recognition therefore even if their lives were worlds apart. I love the way you share on your blog. That I haven't is somewhat inherent to the story's premise, but I feel inspired by yours to see how I can come up with solution.
Hoka Hey! Tacoma friend. Judith

Hi Tamiko: I love the idea of your memoir project. It's such an important topic in terms of US history, too. Was your family still in Hiroshima during the bombing? I hope not. My husband's family was from Tokyo (or they were there arond WWII, anyway--they were originally from Shikoku and Mito, hundreds of years ago). Anyway, I'll look up the blog more in-depth, soon. And I'm glad you've reconnected with one of your dad's closest friends.

I taught writing for a number of years at BU, UMASS Boston, Brandeis, and in BU's college-behind-bars program, in various men's and women's prisons in the US. Now I teach writing a few months every year in the MBA program at BU and live the rest of the time in Osaka, although I'm from Boston. Teaching in the MBA program allows me to teach in short bursts (weekend seminars) so I can fit that in during my trips home.

Where and what do you teach?

Here's a recent piece I wrote about being a Jewish American woman married to a Japanese man, if you're interested: http://www.asianjewishlife.org/images/issues/spring2010/PDFs/Writers-Desk-Love-Story-P32-P34.pdf

Really looking forward to staying connected,

Tracy

Hi Tamiko. I tried to send you a message with my friend request but the message box cut me off, so I couldn't finish it. But I'd really love to hear about your book project. Was your father from Japan? I'm living in Japan now, married to a man from Osaka, and have been writing and publishing a bit about multicultural relationships. I also, like you, have been teaching writing at the uni level (in the US, not Japan) for over a decade and am working on a memoir-type project. Anyway, hoping to keep in touch and learn more about your work! all the best,

Tracy

Hi Tamiko, Fantastic that you've found the way to SheWrites. It's a great place to make connections and share your work with other writers.
I'm sorry you won't be attending the Seattle SW one-year B-day Bash but hope we'll have a chance to meet IRL soon. We may have some acquaintances in common since I've was the International Examiner's arts reporter from 2004-2006. I still contribute now and then, but am focused on finishing a book length manuscript. Look forward to reading your blogs.
