I'm lucky to be in a long-time writing group with folks who all write in different genres. There are a few of us write literary fiction for adults, but we also have two YA writers, a nuclear-arms-potboiler writer who also writes travel articles…

On Trying. And Fiction. And Fish

Lately, I've read too much fiction that seems to me like this: a story opens at a point where the characters have stopped trying/hoping to make their lives change. They think about this not trying/not hoping, wondering how and why they've stopped trying/hoping. Often, there is a moment where they almost try/hope--a climax. Almost. But in the denouement, they end up not-trying/not-hoping some more. (Many of these stories take place in settings that seem to me not-inherently-hopeless--present-day…See More

The Three P's of Conference Attendance (Or Why a Writer's Conference is Not a Reality TV Show)

Ah, conference season! You walk in, pitch memorized, nametagged, and first five pages in hand, ready to...

...berate Very Famous Editor during a morning one-on-one for not recognizing your manifest talent?

...interrupt lunch conversation between your roommate and Very Famous Agent about their mutual adoration of labradoodles to "unobtrusively" slip in a plug for your novel?

...sidle up to Very Famous Author at an evening social event and let her know she needs… Continue

So glad you like SW -- you're so welcome! It's a real joy for me to do this.

And congratulations on your trailer, and on doing it yourself. I really enjoyed it -- you should drop-in on the Marketing and Promotion group (if you haven't done so already) and share your experience with them!

Heh. Maybe not. I want to be told a story, taken on a journey, and I have to be given a reason to give a damn about the characters. I loved "The Great Gatsby" because every character in that book echoed somewhere in me. I detested "Bel Canto" because the characters seemed to be in there for no reason except to get the author's idea for a story across. And if the author doesn't convince me that s/he doesn't care about the characters, I'm not going to care about them either.

(By the way, I adore "Kavalier & Klay". I don't consider Michael a postmodern writer - he's a storyteller who gives me the kind of people I care about following down the road.)

Hey Tanya!
Thank you for the compliment with regards to my cover and title. The book is a twisted take on a traditional parenting guide that is part memoir/part instructional spoof. It is going in the "humor" section, though I always joke that "I stand behind these methods!"
