A Note from Deborah Siegel

What are the Pink and Blue Diaries?  Hey, I'm still figuring that out.  In the meantime, I'm using this page--and a tumblr blog--to ease into my next writing project thing (aka maybe book?!), which will be, broadly speaking, about the gendering of childhood. Who am I?  Deborah Siegel, creator of Girl w/Pen and one of the early co-creators of She Writes.  Happy to have you join me here!  You can also reach me at my regular profile page here at She Writes or at deborah@shewrites.com

It's Deborah Siegel here.

Ask me five years ago and I’d have told you I’d be first in line to challenge gender stereotypes if ever I had kids myself.  I minored in feminist cultural studies!  I believeboys and girls are made, not just born!  But sixteen months into parenting my boy/girl twins, I’m starting to wonder how I’ll ever ensure that my boy grows up…

The gendering of childhood: will the new definition of queer come into your exploration?

Apparently, now even run-of-the-mill heterosexuals can be queer. It's very confusing.

Greetings Deborah, Within each of us is a desire to belong.  As a writer, I find SheWrites to warmly embrace members into its 'fantabulous' fold.  I deeply appreciate that you are a bountiful bond whom unites and encourages fellow writers to express their sweetest selves. One by one, the circle is enlarged as wider connections are created. Dearest Deborah, oh child of my heart, be well and be Inspired...SheWrites is indeed noble.  Once again, I thank you.

Thanks, Deborah.  As for my own through-lines, one is definitely control--many lessons learned about influences that coexist (and often compete) with mine as parent.  All the best, Barbara
