Sensory Deprivation

Sensory DeprivationThere was a recent blog on this topic. The site has many provocative and interesting posts. I read this one with interest. You may find it at:http://zazenlife.com/2012/08/22/the-sensory-deprivation-tank-video/I get the premise and the rational as proposed by having oneself be suspended into that certain state of awareness or unawareness . Infanticide

Infanticide. This is a topic which brings up a memory of a distant college course I was in 1973. I as a zoology major and one of the required upper division/major courses was Human Ecology. The big issues for the previous early 70s years in biology and spilled out to the media was Stanford's professor Erlich’s population control book ZPG - Zero Population Growth. This title wasn't our text, but our text for the course was heavy with the same rational. One section gave a history - curiously from…See More

The Rich

The rich have been in the news since the “Occupy” sit-ins.  Well, further back than that of course. Currently the 1% is being blogged about and referred to in “social media” circles.  Is it important to writers? Possibly.  Bookstores are affected by the economy and market trends. I got fairly beat up on a social media comment reply that went five or six rounds. The topic was the 1% and their fair share. You can see where this was going. The other person didn’t believe my point. It came down to…See More

"I write mostly contemporary romance and I use names that are relevant to the character's age. While I love the name Odette, how many thirty years olds are named Odette in the US?"

Character Names

Character Names I can’t claim originality on this topic. I replied to Joanne Guidoccios’ blog on this. This caught my attention immediately. It is difficult to be completely original. One’s character name is really important. Part of the joy of writing fiction is that you can make things up …. that’s right, lies out of whole cloth…. and includes names of characters. At some time in the far past it was all right to use common names if your character was written to represent “everyman” or…See More

Basic PlotsThe topic was the seven basic plots.Overcoming a Monster, Voyage and return, Comedy, Tragedy, Rebirth, Rags to riches. There were many good comments and if you wish to read those and the original reference blog on the forum, see: http://limebirduk.wordpress.com/2012/06/25/basic-plots/#comment-775This got my attention straight away. Short Fiction Revival

A recent  writer blog noted that some or many bloggers do put their own fiction on their blog site and  do not have the fees and costs of a website. Therefore, they are getting their short stories or poems out there for others to read. He suggested instead, we should offer our short fiction on an e-book format venue like Amazon’s Kindle version. The rational twofold: One, to get paid for the work instead of giving it away on a blog. And, two, that newe, younger, e-readers who are on the go with…See More

Europe Thriller as Subplot

Europe thriller......Maybe financial thrillers are only Wall Street screenplays and sequels, and yet it only seems like yesterday that the late Michael Crichton book “Rising Sun” was on the shelves. The business-as-war premise of that story was also connected to the leading edge of the digital technology of that time.  Also, back when, Tom Clancy’s “Executive Orders” had as a sub-plot, the financial meltdown caused by system hackers. In the very real 1999 “dot-com” crash, and then the 2007-2008…See More

As far as marketing strategies go, what I'm getting from my reading is that as important as having a platform is, a website, a blog, a facebook, etc, etc, the one factor that overrides all of them is actually making connections with people. Just having a thousand twitter followers isn't going to cut it, having personnel engagement is what you need. If people feel they know you, they are more likely to want to support you and (given what you've written is worthy), the more likely they are to recommend your work. That is what sells books.
