Price and Prejudice?

Posted on November 13, 2009 at 10:01am 3 Comments

So the PW list of the best books of 2009 doesn't include any women writers. The whole thing feels inescapably done there/been that to me: the list itself, the feminist outrage, the clueless defense, and then the discussion about how women's work is individually and categorically undervalued. This is a dance that has had more performances than The Nutcracker (no pun intended). It feels past time to turn the page, start a new conversation. But how can we when the all-male achievement lists keep… Continue

Co-Creating a Monster

Posted on October 7, 2009 at 3:53am 5 Comments

How many authors does it take to create a monster? Random House recently published a new edition of the novel Frankenstein with a surprising change: Mary Shelley is no longer identified as the novel’s sole author. Instead, the cover reads “Mary Shelley (with Percy Shelley).” Why is Percy now getting marquee billing? It’s a significant moment in the long-running struggle to determine the true author (or authors) of what is considered one of the most important novels ever written. And it… Continue

Dear Victoria, I was very moved by your piece Modern Love, which I sought out after your appearance on the morning show as I happened to flip through the channels. It was of particular intrigue to me as 12 years ago my husband of 8 yrs left me when I was 4 months pregnant with our first child. There are more details about my journey I would love to share with you. I published my story in a compilation devotional and also went through a journey of forgiveness. I can truly say God has made "beauty from ashes". I have been married to a wonderful man for 10 years. I would love to correspond with you and share our journeys. God bless you and Judah. You made the right choice. Forgiveness is the gift you give yourself--when you release yourself from the bitterness of someone who has offended you and hurt you. It frees your heart to love again.

Hi Victoria...

I just read your article in the Times, Modern Love... outstanding! outstanding! I love the way you wrote that without self pity and yet with such pathos for all those who bravely continue to do what's right even though 'rights' are no longer relevant. What a woman!

Hello Victoria,

Welcome to Mother Writer! Please stop in and introduce yourself to the group. I read your article in the NYT. It is very touching, though I don't know if I would be brave enough to make the same decision. Thinking of it from your son's point of view, I believe you made the right one. Thank you for your honesty and engaging story. If there is anything I can do for you just drop a line.
