Writer's Retreat

Summer is often the time we take a vacation, a respite from work and perhaps a change of scenery to refresh and invigorate us. The luxury of a writer’s retreat may appeal to us and there are a variety of places and styles, ranging from Anderson Center in Minnesota to a Tuscan farmhouse in Assisi Italy, from the East Coast to the West, from retreats where you don’t encounter anyone to retreats where you are part of a vibrant interactive group.  Many require spring applications along with writing…See More

Musings: My favorite place to write

My favorite place to write is at the kitchen table.Or at the computer downstairs, new invention, new style. In a circle. In a garden.I don’t have the garden any more. Poetry with Youth: A True Story

This is a true story. It is a story about a dream come true, working with young people, expectations and perfectionism. Leaving room for magic. As the after school writing instructor at Face to Face Academy, I have learned to not take anything for granted. These students are here at this small charter school because they want to graduate but have fallen behind for a variety of reasons. Some have had bad luck or made bad choices. Some are parents, some are homeless, some have mental illness or…See More

Daily writing practice

Posted on August 26, 2011 at 11:00am 0 Comments

I am often asked if I write daily. The answer is, "No, but I do something about writing daily...revising, editing, scanning manuscripts that were written on a word processor to be edited, promoting my books by setting up readings, networking with other writers, prepping for my writing workshops." Thanks, Wendy, for reaching out.  I would love to have you join The Cancer Poetry Project. I'm so impressed with your broad spectrum of work. And I love to meet a fellow Minnesotan--saw your mention of St. Louis Park Friends of the Arts. Do you live in SLP? I do!
