Building Blocks: The John Hancock Center (Princeton Architectural Press, 2000): The John Hancock Center presents a collection of Ezra Stoller photographs taken from construction to the early years of the building's use. In the Introduction, the only text in this book, I tell the story of structural engineer Fazlur R. Khan and architect Bruce J. Graham’s collaboration as exemplified in this
record-setting multi-use design project. Fazlur Khan, my father, both initiated his concept for a trussed-tube structural system and assumed responsibility for the structural design and construction of the 100-story tower.
Engineering Architecture: The Vision of Fazlur R. Khan (W.W. Norton & Co., 2004): Engineering Architecture presents a considerably more detailed story of my father’s life and work. In this book I examine my father’s innovations and design projects – projects such as Chicago’s 100-story John Hancock Center and 110-story Sears Tower (now Willis Tower) – within the context of his personal beliefs and the social setting of the time in which he practiced. I try to convey his personal character and philosophy along with his manner of working with people because these qualities were an important part of his professional life and accomplishments.
Enlightening the World: The Creation of the Statue of Liberty (Cornell University Press, 2010): Enlightening the World takes a fresh look at the fascinating story behind the creation of the statue. In this book I explore the historical period – the idea for a monument to liberty was conceived at the end of the American Civil War – along with the lives of the people central to the statue’s creation. I also closely examine the monument itself, describing the sculptural, architectural, and structural design and construction and interpreting the meanings of the statue’s symbols of liberty.
