[REALITY CHECK] - How Where You Live Affects Your Speech by Mandy Campbell Moore

Posted on February 1, 2016 at 7:30am 17 Comments

Do you listen when people talk? I mean, do you hear their voice and can tell from their accent or dialect where they come from? Perhaps you try to suppress your own accent or dialect when speaking in public.

You think you don't have an accent? Just move to a different part of the country--or to a different country--and your accent will come out.

What happens when you're writing and you have a character and you want them to sound…

[REALITY CHECK] How to Create a Fictional Setting by Michelle Gwynn Jones

Posted on December 15, 2015 at 7:30am 3 Comments

I read many manuscripts where very little detail or description is given. I think many authors are (mistakenly) told that readers don't want too many details because they don't want to have things dictated to them. Readers want to use their imagination to fill in the blanks.

That's bunk. While too much detail and description can bog down the pace of a story, the reader still needs adequate description to frame the…

[REALITY CHECK] - 5 Branding Tips for Authors by Zetta Brown

Stephen King, Anne Rice, Nora Roberts, and Tom Clancy. Even if you’ve never read their work, you know that King writes horror, Rice writes paranormal (mostly vampires), Roberts writes romance, and Clancy writes espionage thrillers.

Despite the different genres, these authors all have something in common. They are brands—personal brands—and their names have become synonymous with what they write. You can do the same…

Happy 4th of July, Zetta!

I've got a family shindig this afternoon, and there will be plenty-o-booze (hello, we're Celtic/English! What in hell else would we be drinking?! ;-) ). I will raise my glass toward Texas, and be sending you wishes of big fun!

Have a wonderful day! :-)

Hi Zetta!

Thank you for the friending! That always makes my day! :-)

You're extremely generous to offer your help, so thank you for that right out of the gate. I'm not sure I'm helpable (new word there), at least at this time. I have a major health issue I'm working to get under control, so sending out query letters isn't on the agenda. I can't write either, due to the health issue (I'll just come right out and say it: I have PTSD, and I'm attempting to end its nearly 4 decades of tyranny). I try to keep up with this site and my wee literature group here to stay engaged with writing, so to speak, maybe even stir some bit to life. This site has been a lifeline to me this past year, so right now that's enough.

I also have to tell you how much I enjoy your blog series on writer's reference books. Do you teach people how to write a blog? If not, you should. So many blogs are off-putting because they haven't been proof-read or well-thought out. I shouldn't be reaching for my red pen while reading someone's blog, or cringing from their use of is when it should've been are. You have many gifts, good woman. I appreciate you sharing them here, and in your newsletter. :-)

Have a wonderful day!

Welcome to In Praise of Literature, Zetta!

I have to take a moment to gush and tell you how thrilled I am to have you in the group! Your blogs here, and at Zetta's Desk, have become must-reads for me! Be sure to post a link to Zetta's Desk so that everyone can see all of those fabulous books you've been reviewing!

Feel free to tell us what you're reading, start a discussion, post links to blogs, reviews, or articles you think everyone needs to read--anything that fits your definition of literature, including plays, song lyrics, and film scripts! Most important, please have fun!

I'm new to this group moderator thing, and bound to overlook some key element. Please let me know if you see something lacking and I'll do my best to come through.

Glad to have you aboard!

Cheers,

CW

Hi Zetta!

I've been following and enjoying Zetta's Desk, and have found myself jotting down several of the titles you've posted about in your reference books series. I'd love it if you joined my group http://www.shewrites.com/group/in-praise-of-literature and posted links to your blogs on these books, or could give me permission to do so, and not only for the obvious information/tip sharing, but because your blog is beautifully presented and well written, (and could offer a subliminal example of how to do a blog professionally!). Absolutely no pressure!

Looking forward to the next post!
