Magic Realism Blog hop

I was wondering whether any bloggers here might be interested in taking part in a magic realism blog hop.For anyone who doesn't know about hops, we would all agree to put write a post about magic realism (could be a review, thoughts on why you like magic realism, etc) for our individual blogs and then we would link to all the other blogs on the hop. I would be willing to create the link html and maybe the button for the tour.If interested please respond below or message me. See More

Profile Information

Who I am:
I am a British writer and poet. I spend half my life in a partly restored old farmhouse in the Czech Republic, where I write all my novels and poetry. I was a successful published poet in my teens and twenties, (featuring in the Grandchildren of Albion anthology). Then my son arrived and I was juggling motherhood and career and somehow there wasn't time for the writing. So many women will know how that feels. I worked with disadvantaged people for about twenty years. It was emotionally hard work but very rewarding. Nevertheless it took its toll and a few years ago I realised that I couldn't continue. I needed to start writing again.

I aim to write popular books, which have complex characters and themes that get under the reader's skin. I find my experience of working with people on the edge of society an inspiration for my fiction.

The Next Big Thing

Posted on August 22, 2012 at 9:00am 1 Comment

Remember how when you were a kid if you were tagged in the playground you might have to do a forfeit and then tag someone else? Wll that's what happends in The Next Big Thing. Only my forfeit is to answer ten interview questions about my next book Love of Shadows, the follow-up to Girl in the Glass, on my blog before tagging five other authors to do the same on their blogs next week.…

Publishing Women's Fiction Newspaper

Posted on August 14, 2012 at 3:37am 0 Comments

About a month ago I created an online newspaper using the paper.li website. It's called Women's Fiction  and is dedicated to books by and for women, which gives me quite a large brief. It has the web address of http://www.womens-fiction.net. My aim with the newspaper is to gather together some of the best articles on the subject.

A paper.li newspaper is effectively a pinterest board of articles, the reader gets the opening paragraph…

Lessons From History

Stuck for ideas for your novel? Look to the past.

I'm a historian by training (I spent three years at Oxford University studying it) and by inclination. This means I see the world in a historical context and when I write I create a world in a historical context.

I am not, I repeat, not a writer of historical novels. Academic training can be a problem: I would spend all my time worrying about my accuracy, that's if I ever stopped researching the period I was writing in.…

Hi Zoe, Delighted to connect with you here. I'm sorry it took a while, I haven't been on SW site as often as I was in the past. This remains a wonderful place to peruse resources, to join groups and connect with fellow writers. My server doesn't want to link to your blogs, but I'm interested in your reviews of Czech literature. And will try again later. My last name means "from Prague" in Dutch, and recently I learned, thanks to genealogical studies of a deceased cousin that we are distant relatives of Kafka. And him I've been studying for decades. Write On! And see you around! Best, Judith

Jane Austen Drinking a Caramel Ribbon Crunch Frappuccino

I know, I know. Caramel. Crunch. Or maybe it's the Mocha Cookie Crumble that has your number. No doubt Jane Austen would have gone for the crunch rather than, say, Hume's multi-volume History of England, and where would we be now? If Scott wouldn't…See More
