Going First: Beginning (or continuing) a conversation about the creative lives of women

Jan Phillips and I spent time together in June at Women's Voices, Women's Visions at Skidmore College. photo by Denice Jelley I am very curious about conversation. I love to talk with people about more than the weather. I want to know what you think, how you see the world and what strikes you as beautiful, memorable or important. Giving Motherhood a Voice Book Tour to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan at Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Escanaba, Marquette and Ishpeming

August 14, 2014 at 6:30pm to August 16, 2014 at 9pm
Giving Motherhood a Voice Book Tour arrives in the Upper Peninsula What does it take to gestate a book about mothering?  For Suzi Banks Baum, it took two teenagers, a fierce sense of longing, and three years of blogging while “tangled in kids, laundry, and work.”  On August 14, the Giving Motherhood a Voice book tour arrives in the Upper Peninsula with series of three talks in Escanaba, Marquette and Ishpeming. Highlighted with readings from An Anthology of Babes: Thirty-six Women Give…See More

Artists Who Write

This group is for visual artists who write and blog, and for those interested in visual artists who write.  Art journalers also might love this group!  I believe writers are artists too, but am looking to share a group with visual artist and/or writers who are interested in the topic of artists as writers.  See More

Writing Motherhood: Driving with teens

Driving Motherby Suzi Banks BaumOne tangle of mothering teens is this:You emerge from sleep. You hear your teen making a smoothie. She is grinding what sounds to be at least two cement blocks lugged from the garage at a pre-dawn hour and placed without liquid in the Vitamix. You decide that getting up is better than pretending to sleep. Recalling an endless parade of bowls of oatmeal, granola and…See More

Profile Information

Who I am:
Suzi Banks Baum makes community wherever she goes. FeMail artist, writer, actor, producer, teacher and mother, Suzi expresses from inside mothering, makes art that is collaborative and celebratory and hosts opportunities for others to do the same. Out of the Mouths of Babes: An Evening of Mothers Reading to Others ran for its third year as the opening event for the Berkshire Festival of Women Writers. She offered new writing in the Motherhood Out Loud production by WAM Theatre this March, spoke about courage in front of Norman Rockwell’s “Freedom From Fear” painting in collaboration with Joanne Spies and led a Rites of Passage writing workshop for Pooja Rue at the Whitney Center for the Arts in Pittsfield.

Suzi teaches writing in her Powder Keg Sessions. She inspires authors and artists to engage authentically online in her Rampant Sisterhood workshops. Suzi makes hand bound books and mixed media collages in her studio in Great Barrington. Her home orchard provides fruit for jamming and her two teens provide plenty of excitement to write about. Her website, Laundry Line Divine hosts her own writing and a guest blog series on mothering and creativity.

From the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Suzi’s professional life in theatre began at Northern Michigan University, continued to Actor’s Theatre of Louisville and like all magnets to a pole, New York City. She sewed costumes for theatre and dance, including costumes for Martha Graham’s dance company. Suzi has a wide base of training in performing arts and fine arts. Suzi is a graduate of the School of the Womanly Arts Mastery program. Passionate about the handcraft arts, Suzi is a frequent student at IS-183 and had the honor of being part of Paulus Berensohn’s last workshop at Penland, Slow and Savor. Her work with Paulus continues to fuel all her community making and artwork.

Published in March 2013, An Anthology of Babes: 36 Women Give Motherhood a Voice is her first book. Featured in the book is writing about FeMail, Suzi’s collaboration with Karen Arp-Sandel. A 7-year mail art exchange, FeMail creates art events with the Berkshire Art Kitchen, Alchemy Initiative, Kripalu, The Story of Mum and the Museum of Motherhood in New York City. The International Sketch Book Tour includes Suzi’s altered book titled, Listing to the Left.

Suzi Banks Baum loves hanging laundry. Her upcoming book, Laundry Line Divine: A Wild Soul Book for Mothers recounts the wild tale of her adventures raising her self while raising her children.

Nice to 'meet' you Suzi. I had a look at your blog, and love the whole idea of celebrating the sacred in everyday life. Do take a look at my blog www.mystripybook.com where I explore happiness, in a similar vein to you.  I'm a mother of five (three of my own, two stepkids) so if you'd like me to guest blog for you, just let me know!

Hi Suzi,

As promised I’m checking in on you to see how you are coming along with your three wishes. I truly hope things are moving along for you; your website and finding the perfect venue for your writing and to engage with other professionals. Though I don’t want you to stress about it, but do want you to know I’m really rooting for you.

Word clouds give me new phrases to use in my writing. They jar me. Word clouds give me new phrases to use in my writing. They jar me.

If you were to ask me, “what does it take to settle down to write?”,

I would say it depends on the urgency of dream images

cluttering my vision, before my eyelids part to let the day in.

I would answer that differently depending on the color of the sky when I first open…
