She Writes Video Moment #2: Doodling

This recent TedTalks by Sunni Brown gets at a key piece of the creative life: the need for doodling. Granted, "doodle" is a silly word (it rhymes with "noodle" so yes, fun incarnate.) But "serious" writers and artists devoting "serious" "disciplined" time to a daily writing and creative practice, might not want to admit to doodling, daydreaming, or playing around.

Sunni Brown reveals how scribbling enhances memory, while hinting at what this oft-maligned activity means…

Keeping the She Writes Community Safe

Hello Fellow She Writers,

The She Writes community, as you all know, is a wonderful place to connect with other writers, learn more about the craft, and talk about what you're working on.

Part of keeping this community a fabulous place to be is preventing the evil four letter word: SPAM.…

When you're hanging on by a thread... find refuge in writing

I have chosen several threads to run through my life. I am a therapist. I am a writer. I am a Pureland Buddhist. I grow things.

Sometimes I think I must be mad.

I have a therapy practice. My clients are often in desperate places. I'm on my own. The work is…

Around She Writes, September 27, 2011

Hello again!  Today marks the one year anniversary of preparing weekly updates for She Writes, albeit not always for the general readership. For a while I worked behind the scenes like any good writer! J Wow – time passes quickly.  She Writes offers insight, opportunities and outstanding information not…

So You've Published Your Book - Now What?

You've done it! You've written, rewritten, polished, proofread, and published your book. Congratulations!

Now what?

If you've independently published, your book is available online for anyone in the world to buy. That is a significant accomplishment, but the unfortunate reality is that you have a LOT of competition - I'm talking tens of millions of other titles. That makes the chances of a reader randomly stumbling upon your title extremely slim. Many independent…

5 Questions for Amanda Hesser: A Memoirist Who Loves Food Talks to A Goddess of Food Writing

One of the wonderful things about having a book come out is that you are suddenly thrust into this lovely community of other writers who share some of your same interests. The writing world-- which seemed for months on end while you toiled away on your book about as big as the your desk top--suddenly feels more…

Sarah Aronson's Unique--and Heroic--Book Party

By Sarah Pinneo

Remember when book parties were lavish affairs? I once attended a book launch party on the selling floor of Cartier on Fifth Avenue. In order to grab for the glam hors d'oeuvres passing by, a girl could set her champagne flute down upon a glass-topped case containing several million… Continue

Thank you for everything

Sometimes, it's easy to be grateful.

It's easy when I bounce someone else's baby on my knee and he grins up at me.

It's easy when I pull a jar of home-made blackcurrant jam from the back of the cupboard in the depth of winter, and spoon condensed summer onto my toasted…

Four Things the Right Agent Can Do For You

If you hope to sell your book to a large mainstream press for a hefty advance (or even a not-so-hefty advance) it’s almost impossible to do this without an agent.    Agents not only wield a lot of power, but they’re also the only people who are…

Friday Inspiration - Giving Back

I've mentioned on Twitter in the past week an effort among the bloggers in the community to give back . A lot of bloggers get involved in link ups as a way to introduce themselves to others in the blogosphere.

Wouldn't it be great if we could channel that effort into helping…

She Writes Video Moment #1!

Over the summer, Kamy Wicoff and I chatted over iced coffee about the kinship between visual stories and stories of text, and the ways writers and creative storytellers are using video online. An idea emerged to curate a series of videos by, about and for women writers. So, tada--! Here is the first of many to arrive at SheWrites on Fridays.

Consider them inspirations. Consider them writing prompts. Consider them the beginning of a dialogue.

In this TedTalks, the…

New Online Writing Classes for Moms on SheWrites - FOR ALL MOMS!

This past month, SheWrites launched a series of online classes, one of which is memoir writing for moms. I've been teaching a version of this class online for three years to over 300 mothers around the world and it's been an amazing journey.

I started the classes because of my passion for "momoir" writing, writing about my experiences as a mother as I was living them. All the struggles I was having - with my marriage, my career, my mother - all seemed so urgent and by writing it down,…

Imagine A Woman...

This weekend, I was in San Antonio, Texas for my best friend Anne Tramer's wedding.  Her aunt, Carol Blonder, who is also a member of She Writes, read this poem at an all-women event Anne's mother hosted at her home, and as soon as I heard it, I wanted to hang it on my wall and read it every day like a devotion.  I absolutely love it, and I wanted to share it with all of you.  Thanks to…

Women Doing Literary Things: "Pantsuits, Pink and the Power of the Librarian" by Alexandra Yarrow

Alexandra Jane Yarrow is a librarian at the Ottawa Public Library. She's also a college instructor, blogger, recovering poet, and a voracious reader sitting on a tremendous oeuvre of (99%) unpublished fiction and poetry from her high school and university years (and wondering if she should get back into those fields). Visit Alexandra's site at … Continue
