Salonniere (accent grave coming soon)

Since our launch on Monday June 29th, we have grown exponentially every hour--every minute, it seems--to hit 1000 women writers in the span of only six days. We are making a new world, and there is some precedent for the six-day creation story; for my part I am REALLY looking forward to my day of rest!

Today is also significant as it is Independence Day, in the U.S. at least. (You may want to celebrate by giving a shout out, in the best spirit of American generosity and openness, to… Continue

We Interrupt This Blog to Report a Momentary Technical Glitch in the "JOIN" Feature...

If you tried to join SHE WRITES during the hours of 8:00am and 9:45am ET today (Saturday July 4), please try again! There was a technical glitch in our system (caused by a human, ok, ME) and we didn't mean to turn you away. We love you. We want you. JOIN! And sincere apologies for the glitch. Everything's working correctly; this was strictly a one-time human error.

HAPPY 4th… Continue

COVER GIRL: Lisa Carver & the Death of the Alternative

Live Free or Die! Lisa Carver and the Death of an Alternative

Lisa Carver is the first writer I ever really loved and claimed as my own. I came of age in the beginning of the 90’s in an all-white town in a rural part of the mid-west, and it was pre-cable television, pre-internet all the way. If you were an arty kid, destined for cool, you had to rely on your one friend with the pothead dad to take you to Cleveland Heights to go… Continue

Tricks of the Trade Thursdays

Networking has long been part of my writerly DNA. But I never thought it could be THIS! MUCH! FUN! It's been 4 days and already SHE WRITES is up to almost 600 members. Clearly, there is a need.

In this space, we're about to launch some regular features each day. Thursdays, for instance, will henceforth become "Tricks of the Trade Thursdays." I will be surfing through member pages, groups, forums here on the site and promise to spotlight highlights from some of the amazingly… Continue

Why are there no great women playwrights?

Last night at the New York Salon for Women Writers, Gina Bianchini founder of NING, described blogging as a 21st-century avatar of a familiar, familial practice: your grandmother sending you newspaper clippings about topics of shared interest. I was struck by the comparison since sending and receiving clippings is… Continue

Take-aways from NY salon about Social Media and Writers!

Last night we packed the house (Nancy's house) for the 26th meeting of the New York Salon of Women Writers. The subject was Social Media: Love It Or Hate It, What Does It Mean For Writers? (I have gone from being a hater to being an unabashed lover, especially watching the membership of this site skyrocket over the last twenty-four hours, 218 and counting as of this second!) It was an amazing evening featuring three expert… Continue

From Nancy...

Kamy and I met in the fall of 2003, when we were both living in London. We met as memoir writers in a sea of biographers at Diane Middlebrook’s newly formed London Salon. I was on sabbatical, composing “Out of Breath,” a memoir of my twenties in Paris, when I was trying desperately to find Jean-Paul Belmondo. Kamy was working on I Do But I Don’t, her memoir about modern marriage and feminism. When we found ourselves back in New York the following fall, we decided to take our collaboration in a… Continue

From Deborah...

Friends don't let friends write alone. That's been my motto ever since becoming a writer. I would never have finished my dissertation, never have started my first book, never have finished my second without the support of female friends--who happened to be writers themselves--sitting across from me in Starbucks or wherever, keeping me company mind, body, and soul.

So when…

From Kamy...

SHE WRITES is a new online community dedicated to providing women writers with support, services, encouragement, literary news, and writerly-food-for-thought as they struggle to succeed and to make art in a chaotic and exhausting marketplace. (Here at SHE WRITES we will argue that it is also an exciting, dynamic new marketplace, full of possibility, and do everything possible to help our members thrive within it.) This community began simply but powerfully, as a literary salon in London…
