Seeking to reinvigorate She Writes' online critique group. Any ideas out there?

The good news is, somebody else is trying to reinvigorate the online critique group here on She Writes. I got the very best critiquer I have ever had from the experience not to mention a dear, trusted friend, and that makes it well worth the hassle of reading pages and critiquing things in genres I do not usually read. I would be more than up for doing such a group again, and I hope to generate some ideas and feedback via this post.
The bad news is the reinvigoration is not…

What if Money Didn't Matter?

Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.

 -Howard Thurman

Far, far away, in a distant galaxy, there is a planet where money just doesn’t matter. It doesn’t even exist. I’ve dreamed about it. This is a place where you do what you love. You live a very…

What is Article Marketing

Most website owners who are willing to bring more traffic to their site come across a popular term known as Article Marketing. This term has gone through many eyes but only few have understood the real meaning of this term. Many marketers and website owners agree with the benefits of this term while many put their points against this term. The fact is only those website owners and marketers do not agree with the benefits of this term that are not aware of the complete meaning of it and how…

Happy Blogiversary!

You know how they say, Time flies when you're having fun? Well, apparently I've been on the party bullet train since last March, so busy whooping it up in the dining car that I missed the stop marked 1 Year Completed!
So here I am at my 1 and 1/2-year blogiversary, and I can think of no better way to celebrate than revisiting my very 1st post - the mission…

A Yarn About Yarn

So small - to cause such big problems . . .

Dad was running an errand.

For his mother.

It was 1937 and the family had just recently moved to Lethbridge from Glenwood, Alberta.

He enjoyed the independence of being able to walk the few blocks…

The Great and Godly Game of Hide and Seek

Why is it we all seem to struggle so?  Why so much dissatisfaction? We never seem quite satisfied with who we are, with what life brings, with where we are in ourselves.  It’s almost as if, were we satisfied, we fear there’d be no more reason for us to live; as if the Creator might descend on some big burst of light and pluck us straight away:

“This one’s done! Beam him up, Scotty.”

I’ve had that bizarre fear myself, the fear that if I allow myself to feel satisfied, happy…

Guest Editor for the Week: Theme - What Not to Do

Hi Writers - I will be your guest editor of the week.  I am not even sure this is the right place to post, but here goes.

Many of my favorite pieces of advice come from lists of "what not to do" and how to avoid "rookie" mistakes at all costs.  One of my favorite books that illustrates this principal is The Forest For the Trees by editor Betsy Lerner.  In it, she glides between descriptions of how the…

I've Been Getting Older Lately, and I've Been Realizing This

When Rahna Reiko Rizzuto invited me to submit a guest post for She Writes, I remembered, as I often do, a day Reiko and I once shared in Manhattan.  A long walk.  The rocks of Central Park.  A story she was telling about the Hudson River.  Turtles.  I remembered that day, and then I remembered all the years…

But What Are They Eating? Bumped

First comes pregnancy, then comes cravings…I figured the only question was: In the 2036 society where teen Surrogettes “bump” for infertile “obsolescents” (everyone over 18), what kinds of food will all those pregnant girls be craving?...more:

But What Are They Eating? Waking the Witch

Let me start by saying that I went into this story with no background info; i.e., nothing on my copy indicated that this was part of a series (because if it had, I never would’ve started here; I have to read a series in order – who doesn’t?).

So after I finished…

But What Are They Eating? Hot Scots, Castles, and Kilts

I won’t lie – the reason I picked up this book was because my knowledge of Scottish cuisine is limited to haggis. And by knowledge, I mean I’ve heard the word, not that I know what it is. So I was expecting the story’s heroine, Sami Ames, to take me along on her trip to…

But What Are They Eating? Forget-Her-Nots

Pretty much all I know about flowers is that they look pretty, but for Laurel – or “Floral Laurel,” the apprentice flowerspeaker – every plant has a meaning.
Some are obvious: roses for love; forget-me-nots to forget…

But What Are They Eating? Forgive My Fins

Before I even started reading, I was obviously dying to know what a mermaid eats. Okay, so maybe Lily Sanderson is only half-mermaid (and half-human) but tomayto-tomahto, just feed the girl already!
On page…

But What Are They Eating? My Soul To Take

I love that with everything high-school junior Kaylee Cavanaugh has going on, the girl still makes time to eat. It seemed like food found its way into practically every scene from pretzels and cheese fries at the movie theater where she works, to turkey and Italian subs with Nash…

But What Are They Eating? The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio - Terry Ryan

My favorite part of this book was when matriarch Evelyn Ryan, mother of 10 – really 11, if you count the alcoholic husband she also has to take care of – won a grocery store shopping spree with one of the 25-word, professional-grade contest…

Every Action Has a Ripple Effect: Sending Out Healing Thoughts

I usually post on Wednesday or Friday, but I've been feeling a bit numb recently and unable to write. I'm in a very odd place, I feel. On the one hand, so many things are opening up. Things I never dreamed could happen. My position in the world has shifted. I feel it. I know I am right where I need to be. I know I am on my path. But that doesn't… Continue

Why You Should Do What You Love To Do

'If they took away my paints I’d use pastels. If they took away my pastels I’d use crayons. If they took away my crayons I’d use pencils. If they stripped me naked and threw me in prison I’d spit on my finger and paint on the walls.' Pablo Picasso

What is it that you really love to do? What makes you… Continue
