Finding peace after Connecticut

In the next week and a half we will go to as many as three funerals, one of which is for a person I have thought of as a friend and mentor and who succumbed quietly to cancer, surrounded by family. The two others are for people who died unexpectedly, one due to accident and one due to unknown and fatal health challenges. There's not much to be said at these times, but only a sitting with sadness. Spring offers some solace: the beginnings of tulips pushing…

A Little Girl's Calling

Growing up in a small community in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains I never dreamed of living anywhere else. Yes, I love an occasional trip to the beach but I wouldn’t want the sand hills to be my home. Even as a small child I knew where my roots were. I had lots of dreams but moving away from Elkin, North Carolina was not one of them.

By most standards back in the early ‘60’s we were a poor family and sort of looked down on by many. That’s another story in its self.…

Book Expo America - Interview with Charlie Williams

Charlie Williams, British author of Stairway to Hell and the Mangel Trilogy, will be heading to Book Expo America in New York in May. I asked him a few questions about what he plans to do while he's there:

Q:) Charlie, have you ever been… Continue

Bright Lights, Small Town

I went to a reading by Jay McInerney at Williams College on Thursday. He is a Williams Grad, class of ’76, best know for his debut novel, Bright Lights, Big City, The book started out as a short story called “It’s 6AM, Do You Know Where You Are?” which he read from at the event. It was great to hear him read from his acclaimed work of fiction about the New York experience, and I realized that his…

Brand Name or Generic?

There are about ten things going on in my mind to blog about today, so bear with me as I ramble. I am so thankful for my busy days and stacks of to-do-stuff. Without those stacks I would become a bit worthless. Every pile of notes and printed out paper have some kind of valuable information inscribed on it. As I look around my workspace I can count six different mounds of information. Each with an identity of it’s own. Do this, do that, call, email, fax… it is never ending. I must be the…

August brings a flurry of books!!!

I'm sure you've noticed that I have not been posting as much. Well, hazy-hot days do not make for intelligent and/or witty narratives..at least not in my world. LOL

Today I just wanted to let you in on some new titles that you simply MUST go out and purchase!

Where are you from?' is a question I always find hard to answer. 1971: an ad in Nursery World. 'Private foster parents required for a three-month-old baby' - me.… Continue

Living for a Writing

Back when my hair was naturally blond and my idea of dieting was only three scoops of chocolate ice cream drowning in hot fudge sauce instead of four, I went through a stage where I wanted to be an actress.

I was pretty, had been in quite a few plays, and thought I had some potential to go professional at some point. Toward the end of this period, I confided to my acting coach that I dreamed of playing Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire, to which she responded with a… Continue

Alicia Keys launched a National Search for Head Blogger, and I need your help to land that interview!!!!

When I initially heard about Alicia Keys' search for a head blogger to run her new Web site, IAAS.com, I decided to do some research to find more information about it. The more I discovered, the more I began to conclude that she was looking for ME! Don’t laugh, I’m serious. This whole “hiring process” is just an attempt to “put a name to a face” if you will. Don’t believe me? Check out the job description and qualifications (up top) and tell me… Continue
