A Trade in Hope in Austin, Texas

Today's post looks at the issue of human trafficking and what Austin, Texas, is trying to do about it. I've included the trailer for a new film, "Trade in Hope", which includes interviews with leaders in the anti-trafficking movement, documents local community solutions, and uses allegory to promote understanding of the crime and its costs. I've also provided a list of resources for information.…

Silent Night

It's hard to understand or remember the exact moment when Prince Charming began to disrespect me.  Was it the first time he told me I was stupid and my opinion was worthless?  Was it when he slapped me that first time? Or that afternoon in June when he raped me on the floor of the kitchen in his mother's home? Was it when he called me a fat pig, a dumb bitch or a stupid whore?  Or the time he told me my feelings were not valid?…

Innocent Persuasion *STORY*

Angela threw her bag down and burst into tears. “He made me do it!” she cried. “You don’t know how…persuasive…he is…”

Joanna’s eyes widened as she bent down to pick up the bag. Inside were now broken bottles of beer, the putrid scent stinging her nose. “When did…how did…”

Angela took a shallow breath and handed her sister a fake ID. “He got it for me. He told me…he would kill me if I didn’t…but then…smiled…you know that smile…and I thought…he was joking…but I did…

Called Back Home

August 1980

I had lost what must have been hours standing at my usual perch, looking over the rail on the back of the ship, watching the wake. I was transfixed by thhypnotic swirling of the trail of white-blue water churned up by the giant propellers. The ocean reveals its own rainbow of blues, turning dark as night as you venture into the seemingly bottomless depths, the color highlighted by streaks of orange where the the…

Letter to Bring Attention to All Children Who Have Been Affected By Child Abuse

This is an open letter to all the actresses, actors, athletes, musicians, singers and all the famous people of the world.

I have decided to write this letter for many reasons. My main reason is to bring attention to all the children of the world who have been affected by child abuse, neglect, molested, sexually abused, raped, killed or murdered at the hands of someone that was suppose, or should have, loved and protected them. I am a Child Abuse Advocate. I fight daily for all the…

Killing the Buddha

When I was in high school, my youth pastor molested a 12-year old girl in our church during a game of sardines.  Do you remember that game?  It’s a twist on hide-and-seek in which a single person hides, and as each seeker finds them, he or she must hide with them until the entire group is hiding together.  The last person to find everyone is “it.”

It wasn’t the first time my youth pastor “crossed the line” (in his words) with a young girl under…

Amusement Parks Aren't Just For Kids...Proceed with Caution

Is it just me? It seems that my ability to enjoy the moment when taking my nephew to "kid" friendly activities is being impacted by the observation of "Creepy" adults mingling through the crowds. When I say "creepy" what I really mean is sexual predators.

For example, last weekend, my husband and I took my nephew to a local amusement park. The evening started out fun and full of excitement for us all. We talked in the car all the way there about greasy food and crazy rides.…

PS MOM IS DEAD

I was told she was agitated, uncomfortable, and upset while lying in bed watching TV. But this was a state of normalcy for my mother. In bed, amped up, and yelling at political pundits.

Generation RX

In today's world parents are seeming to over medicate our children.

Our children are getting sick and the drugs are making them commit suicide and have diseases they never would of had if they were not on the ADHD medicines.

I have a grandson who is 7 and he has been on medicines since he was three.

He has had heart issues and staph infections, constipation, tantrums.

Tell me why this medicine works? I believe it doesn't ..one child said I don't…

Getting to the Core

Last night my son and I cut up a fresh pineapple – the old fashioned way – with a sharp knife. As we slice the top off, we debated which method to use for removing the core. He wanted to use the knife to work around it, and then slice the pineapple into rings. I suggested just…

Telling the Truth

I've been thinking about truth a lot lately. Actually, I've been thinking about truth for years. John 8:32 says, "The truth will set you free." I want truth, but fear it at the same time. Perhaps it is not the truth that I fear, but rather the reaction of others to the truth. …
