Audre Lorde (February 18, 1934- November 17,1992)

Today is Audre Lorde’s birthday! Audre Lorde was an essayist, poet and activist who referred to herself as a "black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet,".  Audre Lorde’s work has shaped and inspired two generations of writers, scholars, and…

Thinking about 60

You were so busy living life, you didn’t keep track of the years flying by. No one offered the advice that 60 would be here some day. As the train whistle blew, coming down the track, getting closer, though, you knew. You knew that there was no going back, that each day was precious, that life was not a dress rehearsal.

You started handing out that advice to younger people: Don’t fret over what will happen, enjoy what is happening. Do more, see more. Don’t wait until you’re…

If you're not getting what you want, why is that?

Tuesday afternoon, someone said, "You're a study in self-denial."

The woman began to weep, in spite of herself, pressing her lips together, taking her gaze toward the ceiling and away from the face of her friend.  She questioned herself aloud, "Why have I always denied myself what I want? No one has ever said that I can't have things."

Pondering her own question, she awakened from sleep the following day and realized she hadn't recently asked herself what she wanted,…

24 Things I've Been Meaning to Say.

Well, it’s here. It’s finally arrived, the big 2-4. Okay, perhaps it’s not that big of a deal. However, the day before Thanksgiving, next week, I’ll be be twenty-four years old. I can’t believe it will only be one year until I celebrate a quarter of a century alive. Just yesterday I was throwing them back and falling asleep at the club.

Actually, that was three years ago at my 21st birthday extravaganza. Yesterday, I was enjoying steak and vegetables while catching up, with the…

Birthdays and Blessings

I have a blog on WordPress, but last night when I tried to post there it wasn't working for me, nor is it today. Not happy!

While I'm waiting for that to be operational for me again, I will share here.

Someone may have noticed .. but in case no one did .. Wednesday Nov. 16 was my birthday. I didn't have a party, but instead enjoyed a nice semi-quiet day. In the morning my sister took me shopping, then we got Dad and all three of us went out to dinner.

For my birthday I…

Going like Sixty...

How it's possible, I have no idea, but my sixtieth birthday is upon me in the next few days.  In the ramp-up to this event, I've experienced a bizarrely wide range of events, from major travel (absolutely perfect, thrilling, soul-expanding), to a major medical situation with my Loved One (not so thrilling, but also soul-expanding in its way).  Now I'm in the midst of re-organizing and re-decorating my office/writing…

The Cat Isn't the Only Winner in this Game of Tic Tac Toe

My previous post mentioned spending the weekend at a b’nai mitzvah for twins of my poker pal.  The weekend festivities also included a Sunday brunch in honor of the 60th birthday of Paul, the father of the twins.  I was reminded of a story I heard at his 50th birthday party.  Paul and his sister have shared a single birthday card dating back to 1974.   For almost 40 years the two have mailed this…

Hello everybody! Here's my latest blog entry about the thin line between failure and success, and getting older! Hope you check it out...xx,isabelle

Marginal Fail, Nul Point! and ringing in the changes

I might as well live in Antartica. Apart from the fact that it would probably be marginally warmer than London at the moment, it seems that - with a few notable exceptions - most of my social interactions this week have been…

Hell Hath No Birthday Quite Like This One

Today is my birthday. I have reached the ripe (but not spoiling) middle age of 47. I am proud to be 47 today. I am in a good place in my life. I have two wonderful, yet challenging children. I think the challenging aspects of parenthood keep me young. I have a husband that adores me, and the feeling is mutual. I have great friends and family…and I don’t look 47. I think that is the best part of all!

Go Team Cupcake, and Team Cleis (Press)

Because I got this card in the mail yesterday (I turn 35 on Wednesday - yes, I'm a Scorpio!) from the whipsmart, amazing women of Cleis Press, and because I deal with them on a weekly if not daily basis, and am so honored to have Best Bondage Erotica 2011 coming out for my birthday and so many 2011 and 2012 anthologies in the works, I just wanted to say how proud I am… Continue

On The Turning of 30

On Sunday, I celebrate a major life event by leaving my twenties and entering a brand new decade. I have to say that thirty wasn't really on my radar screen until recently, but now I will begin negotiating my own role within it. Interestingly, until the past few months, I've always perceived the lives and mindsets of those in their thirties as quite distinct, both from myself and where I felt I fit in with the rest of the world. Now I am entering the unknown, unsure of where I should place my… Continue

Five Things Friday - Things about kid's parties that make me mad

While I love a good party and always manage to pull one together for my boys' special days, I have found a few gripes mixed in with the birthday bliss.

1. Goody bags – Let me get this straight. We invite kids to our child’s birthday party where they are supposed to bring him gifts and yet we have to return the favor and give them prize-filled goody bags in return? What’s up with that? When I was a kid we were lucky to get a piece of… Continue
