A former college-newspaper critic presents: the Grown-up Version of a Best-of List

It’s list season, with Best Movies of the Year, Best Albums of the Year, etc., being published everywhere you turn.

At a younger age, I could have actually given a fairly educated take on all these subjects.

But gone are the days of lying on the floor doing nothing but listening to music, of actually subscribing to Rolling Stone, of going to the movies without worrying that I might have to take out a loan.

So, rather than an actual critical assessment based upon…

Read a Comic Book, Seriously, It Might Change How You Write

Have you ever heard anyone say, “I hate novels! I’d never read one.” Probably not because the term “novel” is an umbrella term, clumping together Agatha Christie mysteries with Ender’s Game science fiction with Jodi Picoult “chick lit.” But I’ve bet you’ve heard this phrase before, “I hate comic books! I’d never read one.”

Marvel superhero comic books, Vertigo Fable tales based on myth and fairy tale, and Japanese manga romance are all comic books. Doesn’t this…

Interview with David Loeff, author of Graphics Essentials for Small Offices

Are looking for a graphic designer who does not cost a small fortune?  If you answered yes, read the interview below.

Recently I attended a writers' critique session in my home town of Denver Colorado. While there I met David Loeff. I

was immediately impressed with his knowledge of graphic design. I am very happy David agreed to let me interview him and learn about his newly published book on graphic designs.

Can you please tell the readers…

Kicking back a bit...What's all this about Inference?

In my last post I summarized my C2E2 presentation.  What I would like to do this week is kick back, discuss some of the comments and take them a bit further.

What's all this about inference?

Inference is the act of drawing a conclusion by deductive reasoning.  Some people describe making inferences as 'reading between the lines' which is SO appropriate when talking about reading graphic novels.

We make inferences… Continue

My Jaunt at C2E2 2011...Departing the Text: Teaching Inference with Graphic Novels

I just got back from  C2E2 2011.  Not only did the panel go well,  I love conventions...walking around...getting free books...and pitching mine.

At the request of some of my readers, let me tell you about… Continue

Reading, Graphic Novels, and Memory

In my last post, I discussed how reading and comprehending graphic novels demand large chunks of attention: attention to detail, attention to background, attention to language, and attention to art and lettering (size, font, and shape).  This week I would like to focus on graphic novels and memory.

Prose… Continue

GRAPHIC NOVELS AT HOME AND IN SCHOOL: A DIALOGUE

I spent this past weekend at the New York City ComicCon (comic convention) circulating with Jane Yolen, Joe Kelly, Magneto, Thor, Wonder Woman, and many others I didn't recognize. It is a world which I initially entered tepidly, but am now curiously approaching (nay I say embracing?).

As a parent, I was apprehensive my kids would abandon classic literature and I was apprehensive about violence. I was concerned every next word out of… Continue

Danica Davidson--Why I Writer and What Is My Process?

I know this may sound like a cliché to writers, but I never chose to write. Writing chose me. I started telling stories not long after I could talk, and, by the time I was three, my parents starting writing down the stories I would dictate. They were simple stories, and usually about cute animals or dinosaurs, but they had plots. Back then, I didn’t think of myself as a writer. I just knew there were stories going through my head and I would tell… Continue
