3 Easy Steps to Long-Term Creative Fitness

You don’t just show up on race day and run a full marathon without training. You’re not likely to be able to finish, and it would be both painful and unhealthy.

Rather than reaping the health benefits of regular running, you end up sore muscles, blisters, and maybe even stress fractures. We all know how it’s done: When preparing for a marathon, you start small and train over time, building to where you can take on hose 26.1 miles.

Likewise, it’s not healthy to go on large…

Pet Projects & Summer's End

Summer is officially over.

I guess I I still have the school calendar hard-wired in my brain, but summer always seems like a time for something great. The weather is beautiful, the days are longer. All that sunshine just does something to me.

As summer starts up, I get this sense that somehow, even though I don't get a summer break anymore, that I'm still going to have more time...time for something great. The beginning of summer triggers big dreams in me--all the books I'm…

Birthing a New Project: Short Story Zine

Inspiration

When I started really taking my creative writing seriously a few years ago, I engulfed myself in the online publishing community. I subscribed to a ton of blogs, followed publishing news and joined in some networks. One thing I could not find was a literary publication that resonated for me.

There were a lot of reasons for this. Partly, I am not sure I knew where to look. For whatever reason, they were not easy to find. A lot of the ones I came across…

Caught My Eye: TED Talk on The Uniform Project

The Uniform Project is truly where fashion meets activism. It is an interesting project in that it took the deceptively simple challenge of wearing one black dress every day for a year and made it a metaphor that people could invest in - bringing kids the money they needed to go to school.…

Cesar Kuriyama's One Second Everyday Project

Imagine that you are asked to record a single second every day, and that you had to do this for an entire year. How would you decide what to document, how would you record it, what would your completed record of those 365 seconds look like, and what would be its purpose?

Here's what computer graphics artist and film director Cesar Kuriyama has to say about his One Second Everyday Project....…

Maya Stein's 'Tour de Word'

Sometime last year, while reading Patti Digh's 37days blog, I came across a poem by Maya Stein that I loved and clicked over to her blog to read more about her. I've been "following" her ever since. Stein is now planning an intensive eight-week, 30-state traveling poetry project she's calling "Tour de Word" -- a project financed entirely with donations through Kickstarter. Today, I'm featuring a video that describes the project and provides resources for accessing Stein's enjoyable… Continue
