[REALITY CHECK] – Are You For Real? – or “Do You Need an Advance to be Legit?”

A few weeks ago there was a considerable stink raised in some literary circles about what makes a “real author.” Some of the blog posts were downright insulting and vitriolic whereas others presented a more calm and measured argument. I’m sure many of you out there know what I’m talking about— and the…

[REALITY CHECK] When Authors Don’t Try

No one ever said getting published and building an audience was easy.

Wait a minute...yes they have. There are lots of online gurus who say this all the time. Can’t write? No problem! Can’t tell the difference between an infinitive and a run-on sentence? Who cares!…

Lost Time Lost Life

A few weeks back I was at an appointment waiting to be called next. I looked to my left & I saw a newspaper - the Wall Street Journal. As I flipped through it something caught my eye. It was an image of a man & a woman totally enthralled with one another in a blissful state. The man was reclining on a cloud made of stuff;… Continue

My Beginning

This is my first blog posting for She Writes...but I have been writing a daily blog on blogger.com called "Oh, for the love of my children," since January and my blogging partner in crime, Julie Farley and I have been blogging together on our "Perfect Mamas Confess" website since the beginning of summer.  I am copying Julie's latest Perfect Mamas Confess blog here now.  There is a follow up to this blog on our PMC blog and I will re-post them tomorrow so you can follow…

Into the Puddle of Uncertainties

Why aren’t we allowed to be unhappy?

Because no one really cares if you’re miserable?

Maybe.

Or perhaps, because there are already far too many unhappy individuals in the world?

Could…

I'm getting married next Saturday - will we live happily ever after?

Last year, I met my dream husband. Kaspa.

He was intelligent, reflective, kind and funny. He was interested in the same things as me - literature, therapy, writing, Buddhism (being a Buddhist priest and all), cats, vegetable patches, earl grey.

He told terrible jokes,… Continue

Keeping It ‘Real’ Part 1: When ‘BAD’ is really bad

Question: How much dysfunctional, cynical, delusional, pathological and sociopathic behavior can be crammed into a 30-minute TV block? Apparently many. And apparently many times over because this seem to be the blueprint for a “successful” reality TV show nowadays....

Beyond the Dr. King Tape Loop

On this holiday devoted to Martin Luther King, Jr., I hope that we do not forget his full legacy in the proper context. In Meeting yesterday, a Friend's message rather bluntly noted that she is growing tired of the way that King's life has been increasingly presented. Starry-eyed optimists have reduced the man to some sort of inoffensive Santa Claus… Continue

Is it Extreme?

[the rant]

If I hear that I am extreme one more time I'm going to lose it! - Well, not really, but it gets very tiresome. What is extreme about being passionate? What is extreme about challenging yourself? What is extreme about being inquisitive or adventurous? What is extreme about questioning things & not believing everything you… Continue

Wanting Romantic Fiction to be Reality

It seems all the characters in romantic comedies are young, nubile perfection. Well, most anyway. Thank heavens for Diane Keaton and Meryl Streep who show that sexuality isn’t just for the young. Women like me who are of a certain age would like to remind others that we are not only vital when it comes to our professional lives, but in our personal ones, as well.

I wrote about my journey as a vibrant, energized woman in my blog found here:… Continue

ADDICTION (View 1) The Beauty of Bliss & Suffering

It would be better to be your bliss then to experience it. - This is a thought I am left with after I watch the Ram Dass video posted above. But I also have another thought regarding addiction...

"Thanks for your comment and question, Kelly. There are a couple of things I hope to change: first, I want to upend the lingering perception by some that indie publishing isn't as legitimate as traditional. To make that happen, we need to work…"
