...just sayin'................

This is what I think: If a person who owns a firearm is caught committing a crime against humanity then not only is his immediate family quarantined but also his neighborhood is cordonned off and every home within a block radius around is searched and if guns are found, then the same thing happens until an entire neighborhood is gun free. It will give the police something to occupy themselves because they are no longer going to be hunting down and prosecuting people who smoke marijuana.…

What's My Responsibility? An Autism Mom's Response to Newtown

As the news of this terrible shooting in Newtown, CT hit the airwaves, I felt connected in ways I didn't expect. As one who spent many years teaching kindergarten, I knew, I just knew how hard those teachers worked to make their students feel safe and loved and to shelter them from harm. I also know that those who were unable to save all their kids are going to be despairing and wondering what else they could do.

As a mom, I held my children a little closer to my…

[REALITY CHECK] When Authors Don’t Try

No one ever said getting published and building an audience was easy.

Wait a minute...yes they have. There are lots of online gurus who say this all the time. Can’t write? No problem! Can’t tell the difference between an infinitive and a run-on sentence? Who cares!…

Deaf Ears, the Economic Debacle, and How to Teach our Kids to Listen

I had another post ready, but as I sit hear reading the Sunday New York Times, another, possibly more pressing issue hit me:  Deaf Ears.  As the US  (and possibly the world) economy unravels and our political systems appear ineffective - our leaders seem to have blinders and deaf ears.

The article "Amid Criticism on Downgrade, S.&P. Fires Back" The article details that:

"The day after Standard & Poor's took the unprecedented step of stripping…

A World of Contradiction

A World of Contradiction

There are times when you are walking down the street, happy and in your own little world, only to have the world at large suddenly reach out and slap you right upside your head. I had one of those moments this morning. There I was, strolling through my morning walk when I looked up and saw this:…

Individualism is Not a Right to Be Forever Hands Off

No definitive profile of the Arizona shooter, Jared Loughner, has yet been complied. Nevertheless, what has been released thus far shows a profoundly troubled individual in desperate need of adequate help and treatment. Yes, medication and therapy alone are not necessarily a silver bullet in all circumstances, but something should have been done well before… Continue

Words Wound in Unpredictable Ways

Last week, a friend invited me out to dinner. Also present was one of her friends, who happened to be hearing-impaired. Throughout the whole of the evening, I found it very interesting to observe two forms of communication going on simultaneously---one that I heard and another that I saw visually by way of American Sign Language. As is true… Continue

Power in Submission

Most days are forgettable, coming and going without any particularly sensational moments. The changes from the day before are generally imperceptible. You get up, look at the same face in the mirror, do some stuff, eat some stuff, talk to some people, and go back to bed. But some days, you have a moment that stops you in your tracks. When you put the same old ingredients together and come up with something entirely different than what you’ve always come up with before. Sometimes it’s truly out… Continue

"Beautiful essay, Sarah!  My own contact with some of the best books ever written took place mostly before I was 24 years old.  Maybe I'll give some of those classics another try."
