What To Buy The Man In Your Life On Special Occasions

I think most women would agree with me that shopping for a man is a little more difficult than just cooking him dinner. However, men get just as moody if you rock up to them on their birthday empty-handed and there is no amount of fluttering your eyelashes or bashful 'I love you's' that will make up for not actually buying a present.

So how exactly do you shop for a man? Do…

COUNTDOWN TO PUBLICATION—42 DAYS

Dear She Writers,

It’s 6 weeks now to publication. Things are heating up, and matters are complicated by the fact that I had to make a quick two week trip to India on family matters. So I’m sending you this from Bangalore. Not the best timing, but isn’t that the reality of many of us women writers—balancing  our writerly life with the demands of jobs, families, etc.  Not that I’m complaining too loudly. I love visiting India and have decided that this means that the universe wants to…

Writing Process 1: UGH...Why Can't I finish this book?

So I've done the beginning, I've written the end.  I know what this novel is and I know my MC and the supporting cast.  Then why can't I finish the middle even though I know how it goes?   For some odd reason, I am having trouble writing the good stuff, the meat and potatoes, the climax, the denouement.  It's only a few more pages for goodness sake.

Maybe it's all the wonderful thoughts that are going through my mind such as:  this is boring, no one would read this-you don't…

If you're not getting what you want, why is that?

Tuesday afternoon, someone said, "You're a study in self-denial."

The woman began to weep, in spite of herself, pressing her lips together, taking her gaze toward the ceiling and away from the face of her friend.  She questioned herself aloud, "Why have I always denied myself what I want? No one has ever said that I can't have things."

Pondering her own question, she awakened from sleep the following day and realized she hadn't recently asked herself what she wanted,…

Tales from Black Friday in New York

Now that the Black Friday frenzy has worn off, I thought it worthwhile to reflect on my experience. Equal parts euphoric and traumatic, it was an initiation into a raging American consumerism that I thought I’d sworn off, and become immune to. Nonetheless, since it’s our first winter in the US and we either left most of our stuff in a trunk in India or gave it away, we needed a major wardrobe replenishment. Lured by the promise of low prices, my husband and I embarked on a shopping spree…

Online Shopping Cowboy Style

I am married to a Texan…the quintessential Texan who wears Wrangler jeans, cowboy boots, George Strait plaid shirts, and an occasional cowboy hat or John Deere baseball cap.  He is capable of looking amazing in a suit or tuxedo, but as a commodities trader/cattleman there is little need or opportunity to wear a suit and tie.

Operation Shopping Mall

It was a dreary, windy, humid Sunday and I was tired of being in the house with the kids…for four days…and another school vacation day today.  Please…will these children EVER go back to school for more than three days in a row?  So, after watching two recorded episodes of What Not To Wear, I was primed to go shopping.

My Mother's Closet in the Mirror

I always thought I would reach a point in life when I had it all figured out. I would know who I am. I would know what I wanted. I would know what I wanted to be when I grew up.

Psych.

At 47, I still struggle with who I am and what I want to be when I grow up. It’s not that I am jealous of people who seem to have it all figured out. Maybe they really do have it figured out…or maybe they just fake it well. I consider myself a work in progress and imagine I…
