I am from the churning muddy river, from Rosie’s Pizza delivered in paper bags, and eating jello popcorn until my stomach hurt; I am from a mixed bag small town across from a wanna be big town and never feeling part of either. I am from walking everywhere, and driving to the middle of nowhere. I am from the wrong end of town, and Lewis and Clark's view from the bluff.
I am from a tan ranch home with a peach living room I couldn’t…

We have all been reading the discussions for quite a while now about author platforms, specifically in regards to author/writer blogs. Jody Hedlund touched on it the other day in her blog (as well as a
guest post she did). There was also a…

Because it's Wednesday, and because I am at a loss for words (blaming the dog on that one), I want to talk about three friends of mine. All three have books being released starting yesterday through April. I hope you check them out as they are all wonderful people and have quite a way with words!

I found these little gems the other day at my local library. They were a dollar a piece! Heck yes! Gimme five!
Three for me, two for my children. Seems fair. Wait, I have three children. Ah, he's only five and can't read yet. (Hey, don't judge.) So we're back to fair.
As I walked in the library door, the lobby held five or six long tables, displaying rows of books, organized by genre. I found these little guys and plucked them from obscurity. Our library…

My eight-year-old son came up to me sobbing yesterday. Normally, this would be strange. However, a year ago, on this date, his grandmother, my mother-in-law,
passed away. No words needed to be said. I understood.
He had been listening to his sister's mp3 player and heard the song called…

Spring is almost here! Yahoo! I am seeing some signs of life. Neighbors are starting to linger on driveways, I am seeing more and more robins, and the dreaded reflective season of Lent is here. It's time to give up and that's okay.
What should you give up? Is it a big enough sacrifice? Like saying…

Exercising and eating right are tough habits to develop. It takes hard work and discipline, which, let's face it, doesn't have much appeal. But when we do them, it feels so great!
Last year, about this time, I was preparing for our trip to Hawaii. My husband had qualified for a sales trip (yay, husband!) to the Big Island and we…

I came across an article in
"O" The Oprah Magazine (an issue from Oct. 2010 that has been sorely neglected) today that talked about charisma: what is was, how to gauge it, as well as how to reveal it in yourself.
Charisma. Such a strange sounding word when you say it. Cha-RIS-ma. Those Greeks and their funny words. My handy…

This week seemed crazy and slow at the same time. Not sure how that is possible but it was. One day I heard crickets and the next, a grenade exploded. I can't explain it. Instead, I'll just rant and rave about it. (Shrapnel has a lingering effect so if this post doesn't make sense or there are some typos, it's the PTSS.)…

My daughter is an undefeated champ! Her fifth grade school basketball team won their post-season tournament. What a way to end a perfect season! And when I say perfect, I truly mean it. Their record was like 600-0. Well it felt like it anyway. We had a long winter in Kansas.
They won every game in preseason play, regular league, then in last weekend's post-season…

My novel has been collecting dust on my desk while I have started a short story, a memoir (1500 words or less) for a local writing contest, read multiple books, and have reviewed some books. Before you praise me for being so productive, all I've really accomplished is postponing my manuscript's revision while adding a lot more irons to the fire.
I started revising last week then put the pages aside rather quickly. I was crossing out more than I was keeping. But it isn't about wanting…

I'm reading
On Writing by Stephen King right now but it isn't the typical "how to write" book. It gives insight to a very successful writer's development over the course of his life and some very practical advice. If you have ever read a Stephen King novel or watched one of the movies based on his novels, you know he had to have a…

Here we are again at the end of the week. Seriously, where does time go? Is it lurking in our basements, behind the ginormous water heater, snickering to itself as we scream for it to come back? Let me tell you, young'uns. Time sneaks out of the room even faster as you get older. Maybe it's our…

Publisher: Bethany House; Oct. 1, 2010, 379 pages
Elizabeth glanced at the cradle. How could she go back outside and pray with the infant's wails echoing through her head? She had failed to focus before. Over and over she had asked the Lord to provide someone to help the babe. Finally, she'd decided…

As I let my first draft simmer, I am going to be studying until my eyeballs bleed, er...I mean reading some tried and true writing recipes. I'm hoping to find the right ingredients to get this novel ready for another taste test. Right now, the story is still raw and not at all appetizing.
My plot is "eh." It needs more layers, a variety of flavors that keep the…

Thank God it's finished!
Finito, terminado, finis, FINISHED!!!
I finished the first draft of my first novel yesterday afternoon!!
As I wrote the last word, I sat there a bit stunned.
I did it. I actually did it.
I was alone (except for my faithful fuzzy companions) which was okay. It was a moment that needed solitude. I took a…
