Works in Progress by Judy Bolton-Fasman

It’s not the cleaning or the cooking. The thing I dread most about Passover is the seder. I’ve tried to make our family Seders more engaging by culling passages from various haggadot. Plastic frogs and the like have rained down on my seder table. But there’s an 11th plague that eventually befalls me—boredom.

There have been some innovations that have worked at my seders. Seder literally means order. In the spirit of organization, I once wrote out an agenda for the Passover meal,… Continue

A Blade of Grass by Judy Bolton-Fasman

If you are reading this, I’ll bet half the value of my house that you have never been hungry. I’m not talking about “Yom Kippur” hungry or “you didn’t have time to eat lunch” hungry. I mean truly hungry, as in you have to choose between paying the rent and buying groceries.

This weekend the American Jewish World Service – an organization motivated by Judaism’s imperative to pursue justice – is calling on Jews everywhere to empathize with the poor and the hungry by observing Global… Continue

Emotional Creatures by Judy Bolton-Fasman

In just three words, email me what you would do if you didn’t care about anyone’s opinion. As for me, I would simply “tell the truth.” The truth I have in mind is raw and pulsing and crushing, and I recently found it surging throughout Eve Ensler’s new book, “I Am An Emotional Creature: The Secret Life of Girls around the World.”

Ensler is a master of the monologue form, and she uses it to great effect here. This time though, the monologues – fictional on the surface but shockingly… Continue

The Ghost Whisperer by Judy Bolton-Fasman

I’ve been waiting for my Dad to come by for a nice, long chat. He’s been dead for 7 years, but that’s not a deterrent. In fact, the man has some ‘splaining to do.

Six years ago I began a memoir about the year I said the Kaddish (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaddish) for my Dad. Dad was ill for years until Parkinson’s Disease literally choked the life out of him. In the aftermath of his death, I decided -- was compelled, really -- to… Continue

Perfectly Kosher by Judy Bolton-Fasman

I’ve been writing a family memoir. Along the way I’ve collected a treasure trove of love letters that my father sent to my mother. I get a kick out of reading my father’s clunky, earnest attempts to write to my mother in her native Spanish. I get teary skimming his inimitable elementary school print.

After my parents became engaged, my Connecticut grandparents campaigned for the wedding to take place in New Haven. In a letter they had translated into Spanish, they assured my… Continue
