A Bedtime Story Every Parent Will Love by Judy Bolton-Fasman

Somewhere in the world there is a still-traumatized man who had the bad luck of delivering a package to me when Anna – at that time the world’s worst sleeper – had finally gone down for her afternoon nap. She was four months old and at the cusp of real sleep when a UPS man rang the doorbell to have me sign for my neighbor’s package. Anna startled awake and began to scream.

“ You put her back to sleep,” I hissed at the unfortunate soul.

He tried to lob the ball back in my… Continue

These Teen Poets Turn Words Into Dynamite by Judy Bolton- Fasman

Until Adam goes to camp, all that’s left is a shell of a boy who plays with his Game Boy 3D and watches “Friends” DVDs with timeouts for a turn at the Play Station, sleeping and eating. Adam’s sloth didn’t bother me the first few days of his summer vacation. My boy works hard, and he deserves this respite. This I Believe: A Father’s Day Column by Judy Bolton- Fasman

Here’s a provocative question: Is this generation of daughters their fathers’ new sons? That was my takeaway from a new book called “Our Fathers, Ourselves,” by Dr. Peggy Drexler. The book tracks more than 120 hours of interviews with women of all ages, backgrounds and ethnicities within the United States. Drexler, who lost her own father at the age of 3, investigated how fathers of this generation of women recalibrated their expectations to be more in line with what they hoped for their… Continue

Kimani Ng’ang’a Maruge holds the Guinness World Record as the oldest person to enroll in primary school. Maruge was 84 years old when he took his place among first graders at Kapkenduiywo Primary School in Eldoret, Kenya. Maruge’s motivation was straightforward. He wanted to learn to read and took the Kenyan Government at its word when it offered universal and free elementary school education in 2003.

Maruge is the inspiration for a new independent film: “The First Grader.” In the… Continue

An Interfaith Family with a Jewish Heart by Judy Bolton- Fasman

Vicki is one of my oldest friends, and I recently trekked to New Jersey to watch her son celebrate his bar mitzvah. Vicki and I worked for a Jewish civil rights organization when we lived in New York, and at the time, the job was our strongest connection to Judaism. But even then it was clear to me that Vicki had the most Jewish heart of anyone I knew.

During the New York years, Vicki had an intense rollercoaster relationship with the man who would become her husband. Kurt is an… Continue
