It’s Book Tour Time Again!

My carry-on is on my bed and I’m hyperventilating. Yes, you’ve guessed it: I’m getting ready for a book tour. Don’t get me wrong, I’m totally excited to present to readers my new novel, Before We Visit the Goddess, about three generations of Indian women in a family--grandmother, mother and daughter--and the ways in which they love and support each other and also drive each other…

Countdown to Publication (the last one): 3 Days

Dear SheWriters,

It is now a matter of hours, of breaths.

I am about to start on my journey, bearing Oleander Girl to her readers.

Yes, I’m elated.

Yes, I’m terrified.

Above all, I feel a strange quiet. I’ve done everything I could. I've written the best book I knew how to write. It’s now in larger hands than mine. The hands of the Universe.

In the coming months I will depend on the kindness of friends—and sometimes strangers. And on…

Countdown to Publication—10 days

Dear She Writers,

Only 10 days to the official publication of Oleander Girl!

I say "official" because I did my first Oleander Girl event last night at Asia Society Texas, in Houston.

This happened because of a number of reasons, the first being that I'd been invited to participate in the Tucson Book Festival, which starts from tonight (3/8).

I was up at the crack of dawn this morning, driving to the airport by 6 a.m., with ample chocolate fortifications…

Countdown to Publication—20 days

Dear She Writers,

I can't believe that in about 3 weeks Oleander Girl will hit the bookstores!

Sometimes I'm elated when I think this; at other times I'm overwhelmed.

My brain is a constant flurry of trying to remember the million things that must be done before starting book tour--guest blog posts written, email interview questions answered, facebook entries made, friends in different cities informed of my events, flights and hotels booked, publicity questions handled,…

Countdown to Publication—28 Days

Dear SheWriters,

Less than a month left now for Oleander Girl’s birthday! Things are heating up.

This is the week to fine-tune the book tour and plan media outreach, so I’m on the phone a fair bit with my publicist at Simon and Schuster, discussing strategy. We’re going over media that I’ve done before in cities where I’ve been on book tour, so that she can approach them (in addition to others that she’s approaching on her own). We’re discussing reviewer venues where finished…

Dear She Writers,

I’m writing to you from India, where –yes! –I did pick up some gorgeous saris and a black kurti top to wear for book tour events. Will post photos when I have better access to the internet. I also picked up some story ideas, which I try to do whenever I travel.

34 days to publication now. I’m getting excited and nervous, both! We’re putting the final touches on the book tour this week. And advance interviews are being set up, especially for monthly…

Dear She Writers,

It’s 6 weeks now to publication. Things are heating up, and matters are complicated by the fact that I had to make a quick two week trip to India on family matters. So I’m sending you this from Bangalore. Not the best timing, but isn’t that the reality of many of us women writers—balancing  our writerly life with the demands of jobs, families, etc.  Not that I’m complaining too loudly. I love visiting India and have decided that this means that the universe wants to…

Dear She Writers,

I’m excited to be writing a series of posts for She Writes, detailing the countdown to publication for my new novel, Oleander Girl.  One reason I’m pleased is because I’ve been reading (and learning from) other people’s countdowns, and I hope some of the things I share here will be helpful to you. But mostly it’s because sharing my hopes and anxieties for the novel, at which I’ve worked so long, makes this waiting period a little less scary and a little less…
