The Art of Bad Parenting

I have a guest blog up at Greg Olear’s Fathermucker website today, in which I recognize that being an artist can often make me a bad parent. Read it to see me cuss not once but three times (and that was edited down significantly).

And here’s the…

First Pretty Spotting!

A friend just sent me this pic from a Barnes and Noble “New in Paperback” table. So I guess it’s on the shelves, even if it doesn’t come out officially until Tuesday.

Here we go…

The Latest

Now that this thing is actually happening I guess it’s time to tell you what I’ve been working on. I haven’t been talking about it much because I think you can easily squash a creative idea by yakking about it too early in the process. I’ve been writing a show for the past few months and I’ll be appearing in it on…

Pretty is Available for Pre-Order

For some reason it always feels like at the last minute someone’s going to tell me that I’ve been punked and no one is really publishing my book after all. But I guess Pretty is really coming out, because it’s now available for pre-order at Powell’sBarnes and Noble and…

Chocolate Breakfast

This Saturday is World Fair Trade Day. Fair trade basically just means that farmers and workers were justly compensated for the coffee in your espresso maker or the cotton in your shirt.

We’re getting in on the Wake up the World campaign by being more conscious about including fair trade products in our breakfast. Having a spirited kid, I drink coffee. Lots…

Carpe Diem

Some Girls: My Life in a Harem is available in stores today. Thanks for the fantastic support and thanks to all of you who came out to the Festival of Books- it was really a thrill for me.

I plan to take a break today and go down to Vroman’s to visit my book. Except that it’s not really my book anymore; it’s your book… Continue

Mile High Club

Fashion magazine just named Some Girls one of six great airplane reads. I once had a friend in an awesome band who, when I admitted that I cleaned my house to her album, said, "That's so great. I always wanted to write an album that people cleaned their house to." In the same vein, I always wanted to write… Continue

And My Promise?

I know I’m always about two weeks late to comment on anything topical, but that’s about my pace right now. My saintly husband took T on a walk this morning and I actually sat down with my coffee and read the February 15 issue of The New Yorker. “The Promise” moved me to tears and prompted a moment of unpleasant self-examination. I looked at the 1965 photograph of the marchers in Selma, arms locked, and I wondered- would I have been… Continue

Some Girls Book Trailer

My soul sister Renee Reeser Zelnick designed this beautiful trailer for my upcoming memoir, SOME GIRLS: MY LIFE IN A HAREM. At first she turned me down, but then she was shopping in Target and the gods hit her in the head with this idea,…

Tell Me A Story

I’ve been thinking about stories.

There’s a lot of memoir talk flying around right now. Is writing memoir “cheating”? Are memoirs lazy and narcissistic and opportunistic? Are they inherently dishonest due to their reliance on the flawed mechanism of memory? Why do memoirs now seem intentionally deceitful in greater numbers than ever before?

I found Daniel Mendelsohn’s “But Enough About Me” in The New Yorker to be… Continue

Becoming What I'd Like To Be

Miep Gies died last week at the age of 100. I’ve known her name since The Diary of Anne Frank came crashing into my life as a little girl and left me forever changed. I’m not sure I can name a book that has had a greater influence on my life, and I’m sure I could walk out my door right now and find five people to say the same thing without leaving my block. In my upcoming memoir, I write briefly about the psychic imprint Anne left on me.… Continue

Give Me Your Red

I'm not very good with years. I'm not one of those people who says, Remember New Years '86 when we went to Lulu's party and you got wasted and barfed Chinese food out of your nose? Or, remember in '04 when I wept for two days because Bush got re-elected? Or, remember in '90 when I didn't graduate high school?

I remember things more in terms of food or songs. I remember events by the… Continue

Craft Massacre

It’s not a holiday around my house until two things happen:

1. My dining room looks like someone set Dexter loose in the sale aisle at Michael’s Arts and Crafts.

2. I dress my kid in a hat with ears on it and take him somewhere festive, wherein I force him into a photo op that makes him cry. (That’s a reindeer hat in the picture. And he actually quite enjoyed the lights in… Continue
