Segment 27: When a Third World Came West

I took Sam the next day to Our Daily Bread which was the homeless shelter located on Central Avenue parallel to Orange Avenue and kitty corner to the Bob Carr Theater on West Livingston street and across from the Omni Hotel where my uncle had had his wedding.  I held onto the steering wheel of my Volkswagen and promised him that if he slept here everynight that I’d get him or buy him dinner and bring him lunch anyway I could and I gave him all the best blankets we had, the two… Continue

Segment 8: The Man in the Truck

I was sitting at the breakfast table inside our kitchen working on the Math weekly reader double checking back over my problems for any mistakes and referring back to the sample picture page at the start of the chapter for problem examples.  My mother was at the table knitting something in yellow, her back against the window that she framed now with pale yellow valences with matching panel curtains that were opened to Jay’s house across the street.  I tried to pay attention to…

My home is underwater

So I guess I'm supposed to be cordial to the guy who lives up above who leaked water for five days into my home and flooded the place, but I'd rather swim through my flood searching for all these:  FYI:IGNORE THE CHEAPER OVERHEAD OF A CONDO FOR A HOUSE...Disclaimer: If any of these photographs are yours and you would like them taken down please let me know… Continue

Segment 26; When a Third World Came West

We were leaving Miami defeated with an empty pizza box defeated, listening to Paul Okenfoald on the cd changer for the fifth time and Sam had complained that my Fugees album that I’d bought on the way down from Savannah , Georgia next to a Payless was too old to be listening to and I thought he was right and looked out the window.  The palm trees and highway sidewalling were starting to look less tropical now as The Florida Turnpike nearedFort Lauderdaleand as we headed further…

Segment 8: The Man in the Truck

I hadn’t talked to Sheedy in a long while and I was sitting crunching on the last couple bites of my orange snowball while trying to keep my eye on how to form the X and Y slope on my geomgetry word problem, “If one side of a square is doubled in length and the adjacent side is decreased by two centimeters, the area of the resulting rectangle is 96 square centimeters larger than that of the original square. Find the dimensions of the rectangle.”…

Segment 7: The Man in the Truck

The next day I was on the bus and I saw the girl I’d met two days before sitting in the third to the front seat with her short hair tussled and the dye  worn down and a pink bag slung over her shoulder.  She looked out of character like she’d lost the confidence in feist that I’d seen in her when she was lighting matches in the driveway of her garage and smoking with the band leader in front of her big lawn.  I could see circles under her eyes and a greyness over her lids from…

What I found floating in my breakfast

So I know I was supposed to wake up this morning and eat my breakfast but things kept getting in the way like how I'll probably have to live in Florida forever till my place gets fixed back up from the neighbor flooding my ceilings. Or how I can't sip my coffee because I keep thinking about my favorite coffee in Baltimore, Zekes which I usually drink next to my oatmeal but which I can't spoon into my mouth cause I have to swallow the bitter pill: the organic milk I bought has gone bad along… Continue

"Babble away, Lynne! It's true, there is so much to think about. What you said about narrowing your initial reach reminds me of Seth Godin. Do you read his blog? He's a marketing guru and sends quick snippets every morning. Good stuff."
