Living in Hawaii does have its perks. The red carpet was rolled out across the sand at the premiere of Season Two of Hawaii Five-O. This event took place last Saturday in Waikiki. Thousands of fans were on location to meet with their favorite stars from the series, including Scott Caan, Alex O'Loughlin,…

Ever since I have been living in the South Pacific, the meal we rely on for quick fixings, or the easy anytime snack is saimin, otherwise known as ramen noodles. Saimin is the Hawaiian version of ramen, possibly stemming from the Chinese words sai (thin) and mein (noodle). It is usually served with beef, chicken or shrimp broth. My kids grew up eating it, and they would even eat it raw (not sure how good that was for them), but they survived. Click…

I recently heard an amazing trio of young men on The Talk, a fun talk show. One of my favorite singing groups is Il Divo. Il Divo (which means "divine male performer - in Italian") is made up of four vocalists. American tenor, David Miller, French pop singer, Sebastien Izambard, Spanish baritone Carlos Marin and Swiss…

n the early 1900s many immigrant men were recruited to work on the sugar cane plantations in Hawaii on temporary visas. Rather than intermarry, a match making organization sent pictures of these men home to recruit willing women to be their wives, and to help on the plantations. These were…

I am a very fortunate mother. I say that because I have been blessed with a very loving and caring daughter. Many people want a son as their first child, but I believe it is better to have a daughter first. This is a tribute to loving and caring daughters everywhere, but especially my own. You can see her in my avatar, which was taken when she was less than a year old. We were then living in the South Pacific Island of Tonga.

My husband and I recently inherited two fine fishing poles. We live on the North Shore on the island of Oahu in Hawaii. We often notice fishing poles stuck in the sand on the shore near the winding highway on our way to and from Honolulu. Some of these poles have bells on them to indicate that a sea creature is biting the line.…

Late at night as we drive from Honolulu to the North Shore, we often catch Love Songs on the Krater 96.3, one of my favorite radio stations. You can listen to it live by clicking the button at the top. Since it takes about an hour to drive down the winding road to our townhouse, the vibes help to pass the time as we sing along with the romantic tunes.…

Aloha has been known as a way to say hello and goodbye, as well as another word for the loving spirit and soul of the Hawaiian Islands. It is used to add to the last day of the work week, in anticipation of a great time (Aloha Friday!) There is actually more to it than that. I want to share some thoughts about…

The ukulele is usually associated with Hawaiian music. But, before the haole (white) missionaries came to Hawaii, the Hawaiians knew very little about melody. They performed solo chants without any accompaniment for ceremonies and rituals with a monotone voice.

When I first moved to Hawaii, I was quite impressed with the amount and quality of jewelry that many of the older Hawaiian women wore. It was not uncommon to see four or five solid gold bracelets and three or more golden necklaces adorning their arms and necks. I was curious as to why these pretty women had to wear so…

Having been endowed with dishwater (dirty) blond hair, I began coloring my own hair when I was 13 years old. Unfortunately, this was before these shades were acceptable like they are these days. We seem…
