A Touch of Autumn

A brisk wind is in the air, and it is whispering that autumn is soon drawing near. A carpeted bed of leaves have already fallen, and the "shoemakers" are beginning to show their vibrant colors. The gray squirrels have been extremely voracious, gathering all they can carry to their trees.
Soon, corn shocks will ornate the fields with scattered pumpkins for the pickings. Little children walking and thumping to see which pumpkin will be chosen for mamaw's award winning pumpkin pie. The smell in the kitchen will be filled with spices of cinnamon, nutmeg, and brown sugar, while the apples are turned into turnovers.
Frost will scatter upon the ground slowly killing any of the summer weeds. First, the colors of maple trees will fill the mountain side with reds, adding a kaleidoscope of yellows and oranges, giving the appearance of a majestic fire.
We will prepare as well for the forthcoming winter. Cutting and splitting wood, stocking canned goods, and assuring that our shelves are loaded with the basic necessities to survive.
For the present, I shall enjoy the tease that Mother Nature has offered me. I shall add an extra blanket for tonight, snuggling a little closer to my loved ones, and offering thanks for what I have.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. I have lived in Florida. And , you are right . There are no seasons.

Autumn is my favorite season. I can imagine, as you describe it here, the kaleidoscope of yellows and oranges that give the appearance of a majestic fire. Fabulous! We don't get autumn in all its brilliance here in Florida. But I have my memories of many autumns in Wisconsin. Thanks for reminding me!
