Alix Kates Shulman shares her experiences as a mentor with Girls Write Now

We often talk about the organization Girls Write Now here on She Writes. To quote from our own About Us page, Girls Write Now "has been a philanthropic partner since we began. As an organization, part of our mission is to grow with GWN and support it in every way we can, by identifying writers to teach Craft Workshops, by inviting authors to speak at GWN events, and through fundraising."

But what is it all about? To quote their own About Us page, "Girls Write Now (GWN) is the first organization in the United States, and the only one on the East coast, to combine mentoring and writing instruction within the context of all-girl programming. " What they do is pair up great writers with at-risk girls from New York City's public school system. Check out their website for more information, and details about how you can get involved.

Today, they've shared some great videos with us. In the first, Alix Kates Shulman, writer and Girls Write Now mentor, talks a bit about her experience in the program.

In the second, we meet Alix's mentee, Samantha Moses, and the two reflect on the program together.

Thanks for this post. GWN has always been an organization that I can't wait to contribute to. The program is an amazing way for girls to grow into little women and perfect a craft that they choose to. Big High Five to GWN. Thanks for all that they do.

"Thank you, Kate! I'm very happy to be friended. My mother, the English teacher, would have been horrified that "friend" has become a verb!"
