First of all -- a HUGE thank you to everyone who entered our first-ever "Young Adult Novelist" contest, with 100% of the entry fees going to support the important work of Girls Write Now.  It's such a worthy organization, I hope that the $3975 raised is some consolation to the 260 of you who didn't make this list.  The quality of the entries was mind-bogglingly good (hence our needing an extra day to decide), so please, continue to work on your projects and stay tuned for more contests on She Writes!

And now (I can't imagine any of you actually read that first paragraph), drum roll, please...

Our five winners, who will get feedback on their synopses and excerpts, as well as guidance about next steps toward publication from agents ELIZABETH KAPLAN (Elizabeth Kaplan Literary Agency) and KIRBY KIM (William Morris Endeavor), and editors MICHELLE H. NAGLER (Bloomsbury), LANIE DAVIS (Alloy), and STACEY BARNEY (Penguin Putnam), are...

MELANIE BISHOP, from Prescott, Arizona: "My So-Called Ruined Life"

SARAH COMBS, from Lexington, Kentucky: "Breakfast Served Anytime"

HELENE DUNBAR, from Nashville, Tennessee: "In Case of Emergency"

KATHRYN KUPANOFF, from Los Angeles, California: "Black Lace and the Clock Tower"

JONI SENSEL, from Enumclaw, Washington: "Escape Velocity"

I know that hundreds are you are disappointed right now, and I hate that!  I do hope you will take this encouragement, and use this amazing community (don't forget to connect with your fellow entrants, who may become great writing buddies or even valuable readers for your works-in-progress) to KEEP GOING.

And stay tuned -- in the next hour or so I will post the synopses and excerpts our five winners submitted, so that they can share their work with She Writes, and you can enjoy it -- even if it might be a bit bittersweet at first.

Congratulations to all the winners. May this be the start of something really really good. And to all the writers who entered, I say well done. We all live to write and submit another day :)

Congratulations to all the winners. I've really enjoyed reading the opening chapters.

Interesting that all but one is written in the first person and three are from a female viewpoint and two are male.

Wonder if these stats are representative of the rest of the competition entries? Or even published YA books in general.

Wow, thanks so much to the She Writes community! Congrats to Kathryn, Helene, Sarah, and Melanie (and me - hee!) And a rousing cheer filled with encouragement for everyone who entered -- for getting the work done, hanging in there, and having the courage to share and improve and keep going together. Onward!
