On Writing
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: I couldn’t have written Epistolophilia without writers’ grants and research fellowships. A number of different arts agencies and…Continue

“The historian, if honest, gives us a photograph; the storyteller gives us a painting.” (Leon Garfield) The photograph shows us the historical facts. The storyteller takes these facts and creates a story surrounding a fictional family. I have learned so much about our country and the revolution by reading historical fiction. When writing this genre, you must be accurate when it comes to history. Writing historical fiction or historical romance can be a challenge but a lot of fun. First, you…Continue

Great writing is clear writing. Clear writing isn’t fancy or even that “smart” but the intelligence of well done writing becomes obvious when we read it and more obvious when we attempt to write that way ourselves. Writing in the clearest way possible is hard. When a writer nails that clarity, a direct and penetration connection is made with the reader.
Here are a few examples of clear writing that connects.…Continue

A writer is a person who writes.
A writer is a person whose writing is worth reading.
A writer is a person in service to the ineffable creative spirit in us all that can - sometimes - be contained and expressed and passed on by the right words in the right order.
So which are you?
If you…Continue

You don't have time to write.
Is it true?
So often, too often, this is the mantra of the would-be writer. Unfortunately, when we say a thing over and over again, guess what? The thing comes true.
You may be a person who has…Continue

Noteworthy News
Does anyone else use photography to add to your observational skills in writing? I take my pocket-size Canon S95 with me wherever I go. Caught this mundane scene of a traffic cop directing people out of a garage on a gray day in Seattle. The light gathering of this camera is awesome, but even better, it made me "see" the scene with new eyes. Love to see your work if you're doing this.…Continue

Deliciousness. Vivid colours. Sharp smells. Fresh insight.
This is how we experience the world when we pause for long enough to engage with it.
Sliminess, too. Unease. The familiar sad pang of acknowledging impermanence. All this is part of life.
If we're not careful, we skip past so much. We…Continue

Reviews, Interviews and Giveaways
The Mason Jar written by James Russell Lingerfelt is a coming of age love story that will stay with me for a very long time. The author’s writing style drew me in right away. I finished reading the book in one day.
The story read like a long beautiful poem with vivid descriptions that made me feel like I was there in person. The story chronicles the main character Finn's first relationship with a fellow student named Eden. Finn fell madly in love…Continue

"The Tale of Murasaki" by Liza Dalby is an historical fiction novel based on a real Japanese writer, Lady Murasaki, who wrote the most popular book in Japanese literature. She was also a prolific poet and diary writer, and the book is based extensively on these real works.
She was the daughter of a prominent scholar, and so well-educated that she was pretty much deemed unmarriable. This didn't bother her, because she had such a mind of her own…Continue

Recently I have had the honor to do a written interview with one of my favorite authors Tessa Afshar, Author of PEARL IN THE SAND. Once I received the answers to my questions I will say I was inspired. The purpose of this interview is of course to get to know the author but also to inspire new authors or aspiring authors to not give up. Why do I say this? As you will see from the interview this is Tessa's first novel (a very beautifuly written novel that you must read), she persisted and did…Continue
