For the past two years, Fremont AP English students and their instructor have been trying to bring Dorothy Allison's Bastard Out of Carolina into the AP English program. The Fremont School Board has denied the request deciding the book is not "appropriate" for students.

Upon researching this, discovered that a loophole exists. If the book is not purchased by the district, the book can be taught with parent approval.
