Finally, some of the digital marketing efforts are starting to congeal to a point where I can share some of the ideas I've been batting around. Here goes!
A "Share This!" online game. One of my desires with my book is that I really want people to learn something from the ideas I present, and not just consume them passively. This week, my publisher and I started working with the most fabulous Phillip Djwa of
Agentic.ca to put together some kind of embeddable, simple game that people can play to interact with the content. It's still forming, but it'll likely be a combo of a quiz using the very pretty mandala on the cover. (think: like those
paper fortune tellers we made as kids.)
Using Foursquare. This is one of the hot new gee-whiz services in the social media sphere. It's a location-based game where participants "check in" to venues whenever they go out, and then can see where their friends are. The person who checks in most often to a venue becomes the Mayor of that place, and people can unlock different badges for accomplishing little tasks. In short: wicked fun. I'm planning on creating a "Share This!" venue in a few cities for folks to check into. While not a physical location, it's a great way of doing a little awareness-raising on the service, and I think folks will have some fun with the shouts (notes you can add to your check-in).
Flag Day Flash Mobs. My book publication date is June 14th, which in the US is Flag Day. A weird, obscure holiday that I've decided to co-opt, muwahaha. I'm going to be asking teams of people to sign up to go to stores with video cameras (mobile devices will work) and see if the book is on sale there. Likely it won't be, since it's a relatively limited release when compared to things like Twilight, but that's okay -- I want to see what people will do, say and ask anyways. The
Women's Media Center also let me know that I can borrow a few of their Flip cams for the NYC groups. Should be a fun day.
That's it for this week! As these ideas develop, I'll share what we're sussing out. Any and all suggestions and questions are welcome in the comments, too!
