COVER GIRL: Scribner's Beth Wareham on Twitter

Last week I blogged about Beth Wareham's Power of No, and how much I like the cover. Well, that got her excited and she asked if she could use my blog space to tell you all about how Twitter has changed her life both as a writer and an editor. Take it away, Beth... -ERIN

I call Dom Sagolla and Erin Malone my “makers.” They turned me into this tweeting vampire that just can’t drink in enough tweets. Dom is one of the founders of Twitter and Erin is a big shot, juicy, powerful agent at William Morris. Both rock.

Dom has a book coming out, a book I really, really wanted to buy. It will publish this Fall and is called 140 Characters: A Style Guide For The Short Form and will be not only useful, but inspiring.

Publishing types alternatively bash Twitter and ask me to tweet about their books. They made fun of me at editorial board meetings for loving Twitter and I said, “TWO WORDS: IRAN ELECTION.” Make no mistake, reading the tweets and watching the video from the streets of Tehran was a moving experience. I still think a lot about the Iranians on their roofs at night yelling “Allah a Akbar.” Haunting.

So, what’s Twitter doing for me as an editor? Well, I bumped into @mycorpse on twitter. She’s a 21st century Sylvia Plath. I put her in contact with the agent Erin Hosier because I believe they will make beautiful music together. And hopefully, words I can someday publish. I just passed a manuscript from a Twitter friend to a colleague (I don’t do fiction) and can’t wait to read some it for pure pleasure.

Twitter has changed the game. Voices can be heard, people without representation can get my attention. I feel like I now have access to 99% of the people that love to write on the planet.

I also think back to Robert Hughes talking about art in The Shock of the New. He said, and I paraphrase, art will always happen whether or not a big shot critic or dealer is involved. It’s the same with Twitter: we are all going to become better writers and editors because of it.

Follow me. I write dirty things. @powerofno.
