I borrowed a car and braved the new (to me) roads of Kaneohe, Hawaii to do my part for the She Writes Day of Action. I bought Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger and A Short History of Women by Kate Walbert. Both highly recommended books (although apparently not good enough for Publisher's Weekly's 10 best), both written by women, both published in 2009.

The call to action worked out great for me because it gave me an excuse to buy Niffenegger's latest book. I'd been avoiding it, despite the delicious cover, since reading The Time Traveler's Wife was akin to have my heart removed, wrung out, and then returned to my chest; it was that good. But I'm happy to brave the operating room again for a worthy cause.

Thank you to She Writes for thinking of a way for your members to be heard on this issue. As an aspiring writer, I am disturbed that I'm attempting to be part of an industry whose editorial voices proclaim the men are best and the women are less.

I love this! Good for you for taking part, borrowing the car and all. Gives me chills thinking about what we can all do together -- as you begin your life as a woman writer, we are here for you.

Warm best,
Kamy
