Feelings of Smallness

The neighbor lady peers around the wooden fence separating our patios.
She asks if I have planted anything this summer,
All the while watering her numerous beds of growth.
I show her my three tomato plants, proud of my new found accomplishment.
They are Heavy with blooms and baby green fruits.
She smiles like an encouraging mother, pretending to admire each one.
As she walks away I feel pride, a certain equality and validation.
She returns in a minute with a large cucumber and offers it to me.
I accept, smile and feel the smallness of my plants.
