Author Annam Manthiram's writing took me by surprise. I knew this was a story about the abuses in a boys orphanage.  I was expecting a heart wrenching rendering of accounts as witnessed and lived by the main character.  Instead I am told a story by it's main character who has "normalized" abusive experiences and makes note of the disturbingly unusual as if it were a matter of fact.  This writing is not of the tear jerking ilk.
