Deborah, Thanks for the hands-on Friday Feedback Assignment.

I’m really curious for feedback on this latest adventure—a photo/poem/montage called “She Dressed in a Hurry, for Lady Di” that The Mom Egg was kind enough to post as a guest blog. Here’s that link, plus where it is stored on youtube in case you have trouble opening it.

I’m getting ready to compile the next one, based on Nefertiti, but before I go further, I’d love some feedback specifically:

1) would it be helpful to have the text of the poem right there beside the video box so you could read it ahead of time?
2) is it too much to have music/voice/images all at once?
3) any other comments?

or if that gives you trouble, it is hosted on youtube:

Thanks!

Kelly Jo,

With so many image banks available (maybe?) I thought about the beauty of using photos of Lady Diana, but that felt like an intrusion some...in writing the poem, I felt I trespassed some just in imagining into her life and afterlife; but then again, writing and art allow us to play and imagine into things...maybe I should just allow a literal image match up some time and then see how that feels too...

thanks for your comments here.

Judith,

I struggled with that very issue of the images--I couldn't help putting in a few literal images...and I know it is risky because that fights at cross-currents with allowing a reader to plunk in their own. Working on the next one, I'm trying to choose the more ephemeral photos that give maybe more color than a tangible image, but it is hard when dealing with Robyn's sumptious images. thanks for talking me through it.

I loved the visual and word images. I don't think it's necessary to make the lines of the poem available to the viewer. In fact I think that could detract from the experience. I do feel though that once you begin to speak the music could fade a bit to become more subtle. This might help to bring the poem to the forefront.

The images you evoke are beautiful. Congratulations!

Tania, re Kelly Jo's remark on imagery, what I love about poetry is that it triggers images stored in our own mind. When adding visuals you run the risks of being to literal. I did see materials associated with boudoirs and wardrobe and if anything I'd have wished for less rather than more (in number), perhaps a more slow dissolve.I love the subtlety, the hint provided, that allows for each mind to create a personal association.

Tania, A friend compiled excellent visuals (about the Armadillo Headquarters folks in Austin, TX) with music soundtrack. Instead of letting us listen to the interviews he juxtaposed the text on the visuals. It may have been a psychedelic effect, it drove me nuts! The text was running vertically, while my eyes scanned from left to right reading the moving lines and while trying to see what was going on in the background.
Rest assured, your piece only reminded me of it because of how my friend could have been more successful. Hoka Hey! Judith

Judith,

Thanks for taking the time to view the montage...it really helps to get your feedback. I’ve always been soft-spoken, but we can fix that in the studio, and we will definitely adjust this next montage, as I said to Victoria. Thank you.

Victoria,

You’re a peach to go back in and try it again…thanks for your feedback here and the first go around. And I’m glad the “underperson” “everywoman” aspect comes through.

And I am working on the second one this Friday, and plan to take to heart your advice and remix the piano to voice ratio for Nefertiti (set to Bartok, so a little less soothing, but it matches the subject material).

Deborah,

Yes, that is my voice reading the poem. Thank you for your kind words. I think the downside of the format is having to hear it a few times, so I just hope it’s not too frustrating if that is what it requires to take it in fully.

Dear Tania, While I would like to see the words in print now, to savor them on my own tongue, I didn't miss seeing them in the compilation. The combination of imagery, piano and your voice is pleasant, yet at times I found myself closing my eyes in order to hear you better. Perhaps that was due to the volume of the piano. Might be that if the balance is changed in favor of the voice reading I would keep my eyes open. Am not sure of that. Thing is, every next time I'll watch and listen I'll be more familiar with the whole, so my experience and response won't be as fresh as this first time. Lovely poem, lovely imagery, lovely piano playing.

Tania,

I think the first time I watched/ listened to this I wasn't able to focus as much as I should have. This time hearing your words more clearly and watching as the images flow through them was mesmerizing. I love the image of bare feet on private lawns--thinking how we dehumanize celebrity, raise them above ourselves, when really their feet feel just as warm on a fresh, hot lawn, their children grow and marry.

Still, I would love to hear your voice just a tad more over the music. But please, make the next one.
