The last few weeks have been a bit of a whirlwind for us at She Writes. We are testing our sea legs as a community that takes organized action, and as a resource for women who write and all who support them. Before the PW List came out a few weeks ago (no women, only one book by a nonwhite author in their Top Ten), I had been experiencing serious blogging-block. Since then, however, I can't seem to stop. Anger is truly a powerful place to come from when engaged in the act of creation. At the same time anger only takes me, and us, so far. As I said in my last post, I want to do more than react; I want to read! And I want to organize our community around three powerful actions (not reactions) -- to take us through the end of 2009. These actions involve reading, discussion, and, last but not least, firing up the thing we all need most: attention and audience for our work.

So...the plan!

ONE: She Writes, Let's Read!
In my last post I invited all of you to join me in reading the five books nominated in the fiction category for the National Book Award, and to take part in a discussion responding to them as critics, writers, and women. To facilitate this process, I have started a new group called "National Book Award Fiction Reading Group," and established discussion threads for each book on the list. I am hoping to make a date with Jayne Anne to visit the site and do a chat with me and the group about Lark and Termite -- more on that soon.

Join the group if you'd like to join the discussion, and read any or all of the books at your own pace. I know these books are expensive, most of them still in hardcover, and if anyone wants to wait for paperback or a library copy, I understand. I'd like to make this an ongoing project, and to encourage ALL of you to start your own reading groups centered around titles you want to read. Jean Casella's excellent list "Top Ten Books by International Women Writers" comes to mind, for example, as a natural jumping off point for a new reading group. Please, be creative, invite others to your groups, and tell us about what you are reading on She Writes!

TWO: She Writes, Let's Discuss: Do Awards Matter? How Do You Choose What You Read?
In order to have a discussion our whole community can take part in, we will expand the topic beyond a critique of particular titles and into the area that really interests our community most, asking: what impact do Top Ten Lists and awards have on what we read, and on what books are read by others? How do we choose? (This topic stemmed directly from some of the insightful and thought-provoking comments on my post.) How important is it to be chosen for lists and awards like these? Please join us for a LIVE CHAT, moderated by me, on She Writes on Friday, December 4th at 2PM Eastern, 11AM Pacific time. (All time zones welcome, international She Writers!) To join the chat, simply hit the "chat" tab at the top of the main page at the appointed time. Special guests on the chat TBA.

THREE: Holiday Book-Buying Day of Action!

When I announced our first-ever Day of Action, asking each of you to buy a book published by a woman writer in 2009 in protest of the exclusion of women and people of color from the PW list, the response was tremendous -- more than 500 books were bought that day! We would like to widen the action, and the impact, by calling on each of you to buy a book written by a woman (preferably by a She Writer, but we won't be picky) in any genre, published in any old year, as a gift for someone else (or for yourself!) on Friday, December 18th. We would also like everyone here to create a holiday book-buying guide, post it on your She Writes blog with the tag "HOLIDAY" and send out to all of your networks. Please include least one book by a fellow She Writer on your list. As ever, share the love, and help a sister and/or a person of color out -- help lots of them!

To recap:

1) Read with us, either with me as part of the National Book Award Reading Group, or with other She Writers in a group you start on the site. And tell us about it!

2) Save the date! Take part in our LIVE CHAT on Friday, December 4th, at 2PM EST, on the subject, "Do Awards Matter? How Do You Choose What You Read?", moderated by me, with special guests TBA.

3) Buy a book by a woman writer (preferably a fellow She Writer) on Friday, December 18th, as a holiday gift for someone else or for yourself. Create a holiday book buying guide featuring at least one title by a fellow She Writer. Post your list on She Writes with the tag "HOLIDAY", and share the list far and wide.

Please let me know what you think of the plan, and please, please take part. Action makes ALL the difference.

Warm best, and more soon,
Kamy

Kamy, I admire your spirit and your energy. I too am always scrambling for time with my 5-year-old and my many writing and reading projects but I would like to join you in the National Book Award Reading group. I am just on the verge of starting my own personal book review blog so will add the new books to the list. To throw a little something in from the writing end to this discussion, over the years of writing and submitting to literary magazines, and, in the process, reading literary magazines and noting what is published, who is published, and what kind of writing is privileged, what kind is elided and marginalized, it is impossible not to notice there is also a bias in literary publishing toward "masculine" writing, subjects, and focuses and against "feminine" writing and focuses. The exaggerated buzz around many male writers seems generated by an industry steeped in a by-men, for-men approach even as women are sucked into it. This persisting phenomenon is not unnoticed by women writers and teachers. I wrote an article for the Writer's Carousel a few years ago on the subject of writing fiction in such an atmosphere where minimalism is valorized, and included the voices of various women writers on the subject, including Ursula K. Le Guin and Carole Maso--I would be happy to post it here on She Writes if I knew where to do so, but I will link to it on my web site, which is currently under construction and should be up next week. Best--Ramola

Kamy, I love your spirit of "churning butter" with fury, and then stepping into bold action! Love your process here -- a real investigation and study of a MYSTERY. A mystery though that may not be one at all. When you look at the list of Nobel winners of the last 100 years, say, you will be stunned that most winners are either utterly forgotten or bizarrely and grossly undeserving. This is the same old mystery. Fashion and politics of the day govern the choices, just like now -- with a maximum of input from the Old Boys Club. And as we know from our feminist education, women are token members of the club -- influenced, as we all are more or less, by the zeitgeist. And the zeitgeist has one simple name: backlash. Exceptions, as always, prove the rule.
So I admit I am not curious about the male winners of the present lists. But apart from reading book reviews (with X-Ray eyes) I tend to spend hours browsing through books, also bestsellers and list winners at my local, lovely bookstores to confirm what I believe I know already: that I won't waste my precious life time reading bad or mediocre fiction that is the fashion of the day. I find that mediocre fiction usually jumps off the page just by thumbing through a book. I feel there is so much to learn about our world today in terms of solid, exciting, provocative information that the tower of books next to my bed mostly holds non-fiction books and memoirs. But I can tell you, there was a time in my feminist life when I did exactly what you are proposing to do right now: study, in detail, what we are sold as "great", award-worthy, "top ten", "best book" fiction... And it sure was worth it!! :) Renate

Wonderful ideas, Kamy. You never stop amazing me with your energy, your sense of purpose, and your creative genius. I have just marked my trusty Google calendar to remind me to stop by a bookstore on December 18 and support the cause. The only challenge will be deciding which book to buy, since there are so many excellent choices. No doubt I'll come home with three or four.

Kamy,
That's what I'm talking about- action. I'm in. I don't have access during the day so I'll miss the chat but I'm in for the holiday gift post.
