Three of my favorite books by women this year are below. They are great on their own merits -- inclusion in PW's top ten be damned. And wouldn't you know it, they are all members of SheWrites!
Michelle Maisto's The Gastronomy of Marriage -- a thoughtful exploration of what it means to cook and love together in the build up to the author's marriage. Just beautifully written. I love Michelle's sentences, the flow and grace of her words and ideas.
Jessica DuLong's My River Chronicles: Rediscovering America On the Hudson -- an account of the author's transition from the dot-com world to being engineer of the John J. Harvey, a classic fireboat. Jessica's very compelling personal story is interwoven with fascinating, narrative-driven, industrial history, made personal by her deep investment in the preservation of the Hudson river. The result is a terrific read.
Elyssa East's Dogtown: Death and Enchantment in an Island Ghost Town. Elyssa's book is out Dec. 1 but I was lucky enough to get a sneak preview and I can't speak highly enough of this book. Alongside a total page-turner of a true crime story, Elyssa explores the deeper history and resonance of Dogtown, an isolated colonial ruin close to Gloucester, Massachusetts.
